Pre-race routine:

My pre-race started at 8am on Saturday morning. I had to ride my bike, and I mean HAD TO. Why you ask? I had not ridden it in three weeks doue to a thumb injury and I had jus gone clipless (this was my first ride the the new set up). All went well and I even turned the session into a little brick :). Showered and was off to meat the team to take off for Kelller. We arrived and just hung out at the houses that took in 15 college kids AND fed them too! Anyways we got up the next morning, to find that as the weather man had predicted, it was freezing. I bundled up with the little clothes I had and proceeded to packet pickup and set up transition. I tried to stay warm and hang out in the Natatorium, which is where I ran into Haley and Shiner. She helped ease my mind about the bike, which was very helpful.
Event warmup:

I like to warm up the night before by following a stressful aggie football game that is decided on the last play to a team we should have beaten by a large margin, ughhhh :((A&M v. Army was the night before my last tri).
I also ran about a half mile before the race started. One more thing, read the events in reverse order as this was a reverse tri.

Comments:

After waiting inline for a little while, I finally got out of the freezing cold and into the nice warm pool. I could not wait to swim, as it is my best event. I start to go, and OH MY GOD. The feeling that you have after the bike when you start running also applies to swimming. My arms were made of lead. I just had to get going, concentrate on my form and every thing would be fine. I had decided that I would not even try to draft. I would either pass the preson in front of me or... well I didnt have another plan. My first 200m was abismal, just trying to get going. I did however pass some people. I then kicked it up a notch for each of the final 100m segments. In the end I manged to get 2nd in the clydes dispite my horendous time.
What would you do differently?:

I guess once again not suck as much would be good. Its about the clock, not the other competitors.
Transition 1

Comments:

Bike to swim transition. I was 11th out of the top 12 competitors which is aweful for me. I guess the reverse order and new equitment made me slow. The line to get in the pool didnt help either.
What would you do differently?:

Not suck as much.

Comments:

Started out in an easy gear as I learned to do from my previous race and just tried to keep smooth pedal strokes. Oh yeah, all of this I after I stuggled like an idiot to get both shoes in the pedals. I guess I should have takedn a slow and steady approach. Well after I got up to speed I tried to just hang on and keep crankin'. Slowly but surely my speed began to go up. I was thinking that this bike might not be to bad at this point, but I would be wrong. We started going up more and more hills, and at first I was speeding past people left and right on the UP hills. I even caught a nice draft from the lady infront of me as me past about 4 or 5 people up a hill. However, at about mile 5 my lack of training caught up to me and things werent as easy as before. I started getting passed on hill instead of passing. The last 7 miles od the course was done mainly on guts alone. Thinking that I had just a half a mile left, I begain to celebrate. This is right about the time I saw a sign that said "2 miles left" which was a major buzz kill. I did however pick up the pace after this because I was ready to get off that damn bike.
What would you do differently?:

Obviously riding my bike alot more would have been smart, but that wasnt realy and option, now was it?
Transition 2
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

This was a run to bike transition and I did alright. First time I put my cycle shoes on in a hurry which wasnt too bad.
What would you do differently?:

Do it before race day, but as I am usually top 5 in my AG in transtion I dont really worry about it.
Run

Comments:

Started out way to far to the front of the pack. This caused people to consistently pass me for well over half a mile. After about half a mile I started to get into a groove. I was just chugging along my merry way until I saw it... This was a hill on 'roids if I have ever seen one. A .2 mile long, 11% grade hill. The .2mi was not bad but the 11% was a killer. I walked the second half, because with the 5/6ths of the tri I had left I felt that getting my breathing and HR down would be more benificial than killing my self on this hill. After that I worked out a nice steady pace to the end of the run. With about a 1/4 mile left this 13 year old kid passed me and started to give me some encouragement. I know he was being nice, but it really pissed me off. I hate when little kids pass me. I guess I just gotta faster.
What would you do differently?:

Train more instead of sulking when I get injured. Also I should run more hills, which in CStat means parking garages or a stairmaster.
Post race
Warm down:

Went into the natatorium because it was freezing outside.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

As always, I could have trained better.

Event comments:

As far as the race goes it was a nice challenging course. The 2 major complaints I had was one, race day packet pick up caused the race to be delayed 20+ minutes. The second issue was that after the race you had to wait for all the competitors to finish the entire race before you were allowed into transtion area. This was a problem for me and some of the people I was with because we only brought one pair of shoes, which we were not wearing when we finished the swim. The good news is: the RD has asked for some constuctive critisism and seems to care very much about putting on a great race, so I will be back for atleast one of the RunBiTri series events next year!
