Pre-race routine:

Before going to bed I had a chat with myself and decided that it doesn't matter what time I go in this race. That 4:35 goal was crazy to set because it just puts pressure on me and stresses me out. I do this sport because it's fun and I love it! I decided that I was going to have a blast tomorrow and whatever time I do it will still be a PR!!

Woke up at 3:45 and ate a bagel, 1 Snickers Marathon Bars (Multi-Grain), 6 fig newtons and drank 1 24 oz bottle of Gatorade Endurance. (~650 cals) I used the bathroom 4 times in the next 30 minutes and felt that I was pretty "clean". :) Went back and forth about what to wear because Snickers did not send a tri top. I ended up wearing my bike jersey and paid for it later with some good chafes. Loaded my bike and transition bag and went down to race. My stomach was much more calm than the previous day and the headache I had was gone too. Got to the race, set up my transition area, walked around and chatted with a bunch of people.
Event warmup:

After I got my transition area set up I went for a little run to see if I could stir up my bowels, sorry for being direct. :) It worked and by doing so I also found a secret bathroom in the park with no lines and no waiting!! Headed back to transition, got my wetsuit on and went down to get in the water with Rick (rkrueser). I got in as far as my knees and they called us out of the water. Oh well.

Comments:

Swim felt very easy. I didn't push it at all. The chop was pretty good and I drank about a quart of water in the first leg but figured that I was hydrated for the first 1/2 of the bike! I rounded the buoy to start the second leg and was passing the wave in front of us. My sighting was dead on and I caught up with a good portion of the first wave before the end of the first loop. When I checked my HR is was always around 160, a little higher than I felt but it was a race. When I got to the last leg I was passing more pink caps and saw a green cap and passed him. I backed off my 6 beat kick for the last leg and cruised in. I was planning on swimming until I got close to the shore but the water was just too shallow. I had to stand up and run earlier than expected. I hate running in the water and I had to go a good 50 or 60 yds that way. I felt very fresh after the swim and was looking forward to the bike!!
What would you do differently?:

Find that other green cap earlier and latch on to him.

Comments:

My transitions are terrible!! I know that I need work on them. :) I am still going to have fun in this race. As I was getting my wetsuit off JackJack came over and introduced herself and I remembered that I had my prototype "colostomy saddle" in my bag that mtimofeeff had made for me that I had to show her. She told me that I was in a race and had no time for humor! Ha!! I said "There is always time for humor!!" I think she liked the saddle. (I'll post some pics on my blog) I got my helmet on, shoes on, checked my bike for bottles and took a shot of gel from the flask on my towel and put it back on my towel.
What would you do differently?:

Practice transitions. There is no reason that I can't get this under a minute! I was ranked 164th in T1!!! BAAAAAAAD!!!

Comments:

I had my Renn Disc wheel on so the only info I had on my computer was my cadence. This was probably a good thing and I'll probably do the same thing at IMWI. The bike was pretty tough as far as the wind goes. When I got onto the course I was jamming pretty good. I kept sighting riders in front of me and picking them off. I had my watch timer set for 15 minute intervals and wanted to take a gel every 15-20 min, gatorade every 30 min with a fig newton and a salt tab every 30 min as well. I could not believe how fast 10 miles came up. I was right on track with nutrition and was still passing people. I got to 20 miles and when I went to take a swig of gel it was empty. Uh oh!! That's what that other gel that I set back on the towel was for!! This could be bad. I remembered that they were handing out HammerGel at the aid stations so I remained calm. About this time I saw Mike with the camera. He was great!! He would drive ahead and set up for more pics, it was like finding Waldo!! I would see his car and as I came up to him he would be behind a mailbox taking pics!! That really made time go by. I saw the lead rider and his escort only about 1/4 mile away and I thought I might actually lead the race for a bit. Thet's when I heard the whoosh whoosh sound coming up behind me. The guy flew by me like I was standing still and all I could notice was how perfectly still his body was. Amazing!! So much for leading! :) I made the turn at Lodi and had a tailwind for a bit and just flew!! The rest of the ride I felt good but the tailwing shifter to a cross wind that made a nice headwind for the last 15 miles back to Geneva. I was able to get gels at the aid stations and never felt like I was behind in nutrition. Seeing Mike at various spots taking pics was priceless!! Thanks Mike!!

This ended up being a PR in a 1/2 mary for me!! I could not believe how good I felt for this run!! I had friends that came up from Elmira to cheer me on and they were a riot! They popped up at what seemed to be every corner and cheered. Mike was riding his bike now and I would see him and the camera all over the place. I was focusing on taking a gel every 2 miles and Gatorade from my fuel belt every 30 min and grabbing water and salt tabs from the aid stations. I forgot to load salt tabs in my fuel belt. I got passed about 3 miles into the race then was all alone for the middle 9 miles and got passed with about 1 mile to go. My legs felt like they could go for hours during the middle of the race but when I tried to pick it up the last couple miles I just had nothing there!!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing!!
