Pre-race routine:

I went to bed at 10:00. I went right to sleep, but woke up at 2:00 and couldn't go back to sleep. By 4:00 I knew I wasn't going to get any more sleep, so I got up and ate breakfast. I had a banana and a bagel with peanut butter. I took a shower, dressed, and did some light stretching in the hotel.
Event warmup:

We had a hotel room just a couple of blocks from the start line. So for my warm-up, I walked to the start area. Once there, I did everything I could to stay warm! It was freezing!!! I was unable to meet up with others from BT the night before for dinner, so I was hoping to meet them this morning. But that didn't happen. By the time I got to the start area, stood in line at the port-a-potties, and located my parents and sister, it was time to start the race.

Comments:

The run went well. I felt strong through the entire race. It was very cold at the beginning. But I think I dressed well for it. I had tights, 2 long sleeve shirts, gloves, ear warmers, and a hat. I was comfortable once I began to run. About mile 15 it started to warm up a bit. So I took off the ear warmers, gloves and one of the shirts.

The only time I stopped running was around mile 15 when I had to stop to pee. I had to go since about mile 6 but didn't want to stop running. At mile 15 I couldn't wait any longer.
What would you do differently?:

I wouldn't do anything different. This was my first marathon. My main goal was to finish, my good day goal was to finish under 4 hours, my greatest day goal was to BQ. I achieved most of those goals (and if my Garmin is correct, I actually achieved them all). I couldn't ask for a better race.
Post race
Warm down:

I felt fine as long as I was running (except for occassional pain in my right knee). But as soon as I stopped running, my legs hurt like hell!! I walked around and stretch them a bit. I somehow missed the food tent and didn't get anything to eat. When my family caught up to me, they told me they had free massages. So I walked over to the massage tent and got a massage. It was the best thing I ever did. My legs stopped hurting and didn't bother me the rest of the day (the blisters on my toes are another story though). While I was getting a massage, my husband got me some food. Since he didn't race, he had to buy the food at a tent that was selling to spectators. He brought me a bagel, gatorade, and a snickers bar. I ate them while we walked back to the hotel so I could take a hot shower.

Event comments:

The race was well run and there were lots of volunteers. One odd thing I noted was that they filled the cups with Powerade, but the water cups were only half full (why were they rationing water)? I wasn't happy with the placement of the mile markers though. They weren't accurate and I don't believe the overall race length was accurate either. According to my Garmin, my average pace was 8:48 (which is what I needed to BQ). But when I figure my pace from the total time (based on a 26.2 mile marathon) it figures an average pace of 8:53. Could my Garmin Forerunner 305 have been that far off (it never has been before).

I hit my lap button at each mile marker. The mile markers were not placed correctly though. The numbers in parentheses are the miles and average time per my Garmin. My Garmin 305 also showed that the total miles were 26.4!! Mile 1 - 9:49 (1.11 - 8:49) Mile 2 - 7:57 (0.91 - 8:44) Mile 3 - 6:12 (0.71 - 8:48) Mile 4 - 11:31(1.33 - 8:39) Mile 5 - 8:45 (1.00 - 8:45) Mile 6 - 8:47 (1.00 - 8:47) Mile 7 - 9:36 (1.09 - 8:51) Mile 8 - 8:03 (0.91 - 8:50) Mile 9 - 9:09 (1.02 - 8:57) Mile 10- 9:22 (1.05 - 8:55) Mile 11- 8:34 (0.95 - 8:59) Mile 12- 8:44 (0.99 - 8:47) Mile 13- 8:58 (1.01 - 8:50) Mile 14- 8:42 (1.01 - 8:37) Mile 15- 9:23 (1.01 - 9:19) stopped to use bathroom Mile 16- 8:50 (1.00 - 8:50) Mile 17-10:54 (1.23 - 8:53) Mile 18- 7:03 (0.78 - 8:59) Mile 19- 8:58 (0.99 - 9:02) Mile 20- 8:51 (1.01 - 8:45) Mile 21- 8:46 (1.01 - 8:42) Mile 22- 8:47 (1.00 - 8:47) Mile 23- 8:50 (1.00 - 8:50) Mile 24- 9:04 (1.01 - 9:00) Mile 25- 7:24 (0.86 - 8:35) Mile 26- 9:26 (1.15 - 8:12) Mile 26.2- 1:55 (0.24 - 7:51)
Course: The course was basically up and down Kings Hwy and Ocean Blvd in Myrtle Beach, SC. The course was basically flat, but with many rolling hills. I am not sure about how accurate the course length was though. My Garmin showed the actual course length to be 26.4 miles. If my Garmin was correct, the additional .2 miles cost me a BQ!! I was over my BQ time by 1.5 minutes. When my Garmin read 26.2 miles, my time was 3:50:39. A BQ for my age group is 3:50:59.
