Pre-race routine:

Breakfast: Ensure (350 cal/ 50g carb), OJ (110/26), CarboPro (224/56.7), clif shot blok (100/24) just prior to the start

Event warmup:

Showed up a little late. Only stretched and ran for maybe 3 mins
Run
  • 20m 36s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

Started out in the middle of the mass start. Had to dodge my way around some slower runners for the first mile. Lots of running off the pavement. Probably expended more energy than desired.
What would you do differently?:

Start more towards the front.
Transition 1
  • 00m 54s
Comments:

Not sure why there was such a difference between T1 and T2. A fellow racer next to me had his tire blow right after the start of the run, so he was fixing his flat in T1 - maybe that distracted me?
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike

Comments:

Very happy with the bike portion. Goal today was 22 mph pace. I was able to keep a good cadence (92) and keep my heart rate steady and higher than I have been able to lately.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 2
  • 00m 39s
Comments:

Happy with my T2
What would you do differently?:

Run
  • 21m 9s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 48s  min/mile
Comments:

Drank an Enervit out of T2. The liquid went down the wrong tube in my throat. I coughed for the first mile and found it very difficult to establish a good pace. By mile 3 things started to feel much better.
What would you do differently?:

Slow down when drinking. Need more practice bricks at higher intensities.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, stretched and waited for my lovely wife to finish. Drank a couple recovery drinks and headed over the post race party.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Poor run performance. My training has been focused towards the longer stuff. However, my short warmup contributed to a poor start on the first 5k and I have nothing to blame but myself for the second 5k.
My primary goal today was 22mph on the bike. Unfortunately, I didn't set any run goals and I think my lack of attention to the run hurt today.

Event comments:

Great race! Excellent support and staff.
The bike portion consists of three loops so things tended to get crowded particularly every time we passed the start. There were many drafting complaints - I did not see any major criminals except when things got crowded and most of the racers had no place to go.
Overall great race!
