Age Group Rank = 9/51
Pre-race routine:

Slept in...ate some breakfast burritos, had some coffee and stretchedin the condo
Event warmup:

Stretched and setup transition.
Swim
  • 21m 26s
  • 1000 meters
  • 02m 08s / 100 meters
Comments:

Not sure if this distance is correct. We never could get a consensus on the distance of the swim...if I swam 1600 yards in 21 minutes than something is wrong. There was a ton of bodies to fight through during the entire swim leg. It was nice to swim in open water for a race though. I made sure to avoid swallowing any salt water as this portion of beach is not the most sanitary. Almost vomitted once, but held it down, the tide never did come in all the way so many competitors had to stumle over rocky portions of the beach...many people had bloody stubbed toes.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

No time splits on the results page. However, I felt good. The Redrock company that set up this race assigned all competitors their own spot in the transition...I loved this idea, no need to get to the transition early, or fight over precious space. I had an excellent spot right near the bike and run exit. I turned over pretty quickly and was on the bike course lickety split.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 1h 16m 17s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.55 mile/hr
Comments:

My Johnson was numb the first two laps and I felt some chaffing happening in all the wrong places...I'll try to be discreet, but it worsened on the run.
What would you do differently?:

I wore a brand new race suit for the first time. From now on I'll test run the race suit before race day.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Came in to the transition dreading the run...but ready to finish the race...I have not been running as much as I should be. The transition was smooth though and I again took notice of my excellent location in the transition.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 45m 41s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

I was feeling okay on the first lap. There were water stations at each turn around with gatorade and goo. On the beginning of the second lap the chaffing near my groin area worsened and I actually considered walking/stopping. I was writhing in pain, which is not helpfull whilst trying to maintain a consistent running pace. Alas, I pulled down the top half of my unitard and was granted a small reprieve. I ate four goos throughout the entire 10K and dumped some cold water downstairs at the final turn.
What would you do differently?:

Test run the race suit before race day...and start running more intervals and longer distances.
Post race
Warm down:

I chugged an ice cold 16 oz bottle of water at the finish. Walked to the transition and changed in to some shorts and flip flops. Headed back to the finish to find my friends.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The new suit, some wind gusts and not enough running.

Event comments:

This was the first race in Mexico by Red Rock and they did an excellent job. They had good security in the transition area and the post race activities were done on time and flawless. I will be back for this event in the future.

Course: The bike course was three laps. Portions of it had a headwind, which resulted in much tail wind too. Quite a few sharp turns and a few busy intersections, however, the local po-po did a good job of controlling the frustrated drivers. The run was on a portion of the bike course, so the cyclists and runners had to coexist...it felt dangerous and strange, but no one was hurt.
