Swim
Comments: This swim felt really good. I focused on keeping my flip turns nice and tight and not let my stroke get lazy. I did a good job of doing both. I was in lane 1 so it was hard to really check other people out, but I was the fastest swimmer in my heat by far. The people that looked like they might have been good swimmers were all pretty slow. No other flip-turners. I had a few songs in my head that I was singing to myself, and had to focus on keeping my breathing under control (I was tempted to breath my first stroke after a turn, or breath every other stroke at times). I was very focused during the swim but took it at a nice steady pace, nothing too crazy. Felt good!! Strong and smooth and steady. When I asked for my distance (b/c there was no way I was troubling myself with keeping count of laps), the guy counting said "You did AWESOME!!" Haha thanks for the enthusiasm kiddo. What would you do differently?: Push it a little more, I was more relaxed than I should have been judging by how I felt afterwards. Transition 1
Comments: So we had 10 minutes in between legs of the race to change and stuff. I shook out my legs and arms in the pool, then sauntered over to the locker room. In the locker room, my row was FULL of 10 year old girls. They were yapping away like 10 year old girls do, it was funny to hear them. What a bunch of shit-talkers! I had to move my stuff because it was under a pile of pink and blue sparkly 10 year old swimming gear. Anyway, I changed out of my suit, went to the bathroom, and went upstairs to the biking area. People were already on bikes! Auughh! Turns out I took longer than I thought, and missed the start of the bike. Auughhh. STUPID mistake. There went 2 minutes of the 30 I had to haul ass on the bike. What would you do differently?: Get to the bikes on time. Obviously. Bike
Comments: I didn't let the late start get me down and instead tried to focus on just making up for lost time. I played around with the resistance and noted what speed I was going at each setting then settled on a pretty low resistance. This way I could keep my cadence up and not tax my legs too much. I think it was a good strategy. I was working HARD on the bike! What would you do differently?: I think it was a pretty good bike. But I guess maybe I should have gone a little easier b/c my run did NOT feel like I came off of a good biking session. Transition 2
Comments: Ran downstairs and grabbed a gel. Went back upstairs and stretched out a bit. Run
Comments: My strategy was to start on pace for 3.5 miles, and then ramp it up the last ten minutes or so. I started off at 7.5 mph. For some reason the math in my head was all cock-eyed and I thought 7.5 would equal out to 3.5 miles in half an hour. DUH. I held the pace for awhile, but my stomach started cramping like a biatch and I had to slow down. Then I realized that it was SEVEN miles an hour that I should have started at anyway. I think I went out way too fast and this really affected me the rest of the run. It was also very hot in the room. But that's no excuse, I think it was just poor strategy on my part. I tried my damndest to keep my speed up, I was even thinking about how you guys at BT would be checking my RR and how I said "psssh I can go further than 3.5." I just didn't have it today. My stomach was compaining and my head was pounding pretty hard (I still don't feel quite right). It couldn't have been dehydration b/c I was doing great with that. I think I just went out too fast. What would you do differently?: Start off a little slower and build from there. And definetely- Do more intense bike-run bricks for preperation, I don't think my body was primed to handle this. Post race
Warm down: Walked around and stretched. Talked to the ripped woman in my heat, she was really nice. Looked at results and it looks like I did pretty well compared to earlier heats, but there were no AG posted, and there were heats after me. So we'll see how I did AG wise. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not being in good enough shape for the intensity of the bike-run part. Oh yeah, and my time-keeping abilities. Event comments: This was a good thing to do, if only to make me realize that I need to get more intense sessions in. I felt really good on the swim, so that was a nice surprise. It was a really well-run event and I will totally do it next year so that I can blast this year's performance. Had to drive around for the longest time trying to find parking! Finally settled on the hospital parking structure and decided I'd just have to pay the exorbitant fee. Good thing it wasn't freezing out b/c it was a bit of a walk to the U's recreation center.
Got there, checked in, wandered around. I got excited once I saw everyone on the bikes and treadmills. I watched the people in the pool and saw a huuuge range of ability. I got really stoked for the swim sitting there before my heat, because it's been such a long time since I've been in a big pool like that. My mom called to wish me luck & I got a few texts from my friends (most of whom were still in bed, hungover) & that made me even more excited. I was ready to do the damn thang!
Pretended to stretch a bit. Sized up the other people in my heat. There were a few tough looking dudes and one WICKED ripped woman that looked to be in her 30s. As I would find out later though, besides the swim there was no way to pace yourself against other people or use their speed to motivate you. So that was a bit of a bummer b/c I always use other people to get me to go faster.
