Swim
Comments: I went into this swim telling myself that it was a long race and I wanted to race a conservative swim. I did that but it was slower than I'd hoped. I made the mistake of wearing my swim cap over my goggles (which I never do) and ended up fighting to keep it on. I got trapped next to a couple of people that couldn't navigate so I ended up running over them....That was fun. What would you do differently?: Wear my swim cap under my goggles like I usually do. I could stand to practice with a swim cap more often as well. Transition 1
Comments: I chose to put my shoes on in transition because of the 8.9% hill immediately after the mounting line. It worked out well. T1 was a little slow but it helped me on the bike to stay relaxed and get into a rythem. What would you do differently?: Move quicker and work on my swim to run ability. I was staggering all over the place. The Stroke and Stride really helped this last year. Bike
Comments: I raced the bike leg exactly the way I wanted to and it ended up being a little faster than I was expecting. I felt like it was a good course and I was prepared for all of it. I did get pretty stiff toward the end of it though. What would you do differently?: Not much....build more power on the bike. Transition 2
Comments: This went pretty well. No cramping off the bike, which was good. I was feeling a little full at this point. What would you do differently?: Not much Run
Comments: If you remember correctly... I broke a golden rule in iron-distance tris. I ate dinner way too late the night before. My digestive system was not ready for a long run and it fought me the whole time. In hindsight, I should have stopped at a portable toilet and taken care of it but my this point I was in pain and not thinking very clearly. Obviously not a steeler run for me. I CAN run this distance in a sub 8:30/mile pace! I guess the 5430 will be my proving ground. What would you do differently?: Pay attention to MY race needs the night before and politely disregard those of others. Post race
Warm down: I went to the bathroom of course! What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of experience at this distance. Event comments: This was a good race and I might consider doing it next year. It will depend on where I am in my career at that point. Overall it was a well managed race and I had a great experience doing it. Last updated: 2007-01-08 12:00 AM

Woke up at about 3:30am and loaded the car. I had a bowl of oatmeal, some coffee, and a banana. I wanted to eat more but dinner was still there. I actually broke a major rule for iron-distance pre-race prep. We ate dinner last night at 8:00pm. Normally a would have eaten at 4:00pm and relaxed for the rest of the night but we had a large group and couldn't get everyone together till then. In hindsight - screw everyone else and take care of myself.
This went pretty well. I ran for about 10 minutes and then swam for about 10 minutes. The start of my wave was at 6:40am and it came up quickly.
