Swim
Comments: I think I just panicked on this part. As soon as I started swimming I couldn't breathe at all. I was all set to freestyle the whole time and couldn't put two strokes together. On the plus-side, I switched right away to breast-stroke and completed the whole course without resting once. What would you do differently?: I need to practice more open water swims. Transition 1
Comments: I fell while trying to get on my bike. I just spazzed out and tried to mount on the wrong side, tripped over my crossbar and landed on the bike and the person next to me. I was so embarassed I got back up as quickly as possible and didn't even notice I had gashed my leg until after the run. It required some medical attention later on in the evening. What would you do differently?: I need to loosen my laces on my shoes, run with the bike to the mount line, and get on the bike on the first try. Bike
Comments: Once I got going, I felt okay. I don't have a racing bike, so I know I am going to be slow. It was way more hilly than I had expected, but I train in a hilly area, so it wasn't excruciating. I need to figure out a better way to stay hydrated. I don't know how I managed to feel dehyrdated the whole time, yet also had to pee through the whole ride. What would you do differently?: Slow down while trying to mount. Need to do more hill-specific training. Transition 2
Comments: This transition went much more smoothly. What would you do differently?: Exit my bike a little sooner. Run
Comments: I am very pleased with how this went. This was an average training time for me and I found out later that I had hurt both ankles and had blood oozing down my leg from a deep cut sustained during T1, so the fact that I ran the whole course made me feel great! What would you do differently?: Try not to injure myself early in the race. I think I can push myself harder in practice now to increase my average speed. Post race
Warm down: Rain was coming so I just packed quickly, grabbed a banana and a cookie and headed out. What limited your ability to perform faster: Panic on the swim. Falling on T1. Non-racing bike. Event comments: As this was my first race, I have nothing to compare it too. But even lt night, post-race, when I couldn't walk on my ankle and was so tired, I was looking forward to the next one and planning my upcoming training. I can see how this can become an obsession. I woke up at 4:30 due to 2 cats fighting outside my house, so I decided to get up and eat. I had a bowl of granola, a banana, and a glass of milk. I had packed the car the night before, so I loaded my bike in the rain and headed out.
Pacing and peeing would sum it up. This was my very first race and I didn't know quite what to do with myself once I had set up my transition area and done the body marking.
