Pre-race routine:

We have a house full of guest from Louisiana visiting and Saturday morning we went for a bike ride to show them the course. I had shifting problems and when we got home I found that my cable on my small ring were split and I only had 2 gears. I made the call to ride the road bike which I have been wanting to do anyway. Got home from ride, cleaned up rode bike and got stuff ready. Standard prerace chicken dinner and great nite sleep.
Event warmup:

No real warm up 1000 swim is plenty to warm me.
Swim
  • 17m 18s
  • 1000 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

fair swim, I have just been slow lately. I think the timing is off by 1 minute but the official time is faster than I have so I will take it. I drifted in on the last buoy going out and I drifted out going in, but corrected and beat my estimated time.
Transition 1
  • 02m 26s
Comments:

Pretty quick, 7th in ag and 64th overall
Bike
  • 56m 34s
  • 19.5 miles
  • 20.68 mile/hr
Comments:

Conditions were unreal. Virtually no wind. The course was well done and well marshalled. The road bike was fun but no aero bars sucked. 3 weeks back, very similiar course and much tougher conditions and I was 1mph slower today. I usually get alot of home field advantage from riding in the wind on the course and that wasn't there today. Not whining, hope it's like that more often. Having to reach for bottles vs aero bottle is a time waster.
What would you do differently?:

aero bars
Transition 2
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

3rd in ag and 55 overall. Transition is what I did best today.
Run
  • 45m 51s
  • 4.7 miles
  • 09m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

I was not strong today. Not sure if it was the road bike or what but I did so much better a couple weeks ago. I really suffered on the last 2 miles and 2 many people passed me.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

wrong bike and lack of training.

Event comments:

Best first time event I have ever done and maybe the most organized event I have ever done. They did alot of things right. The course, the race officials, draft marshalls, volunteers, awards, et al.

Only complaints, no beer - state park doesn't allow it.
I think the swim time may have been off by 1 minute, but maybe i screwed up. Probably should have had one more water station on the run. It was probably the hottest day of the year here.

I also finally met one of my longtime bt buddies, biseman. Enjoyed a few beers in the parking lot with him. One of our house guest, Sheri won her age group but no other awards in the group.

I think this race is destined to grow.
