Run
Comments: I wore tights, two shirts, gloves, headsweats hat and sunglasses. Met up with Captain jack, Aaron, Isis, Glen, Polly, Pam, TypeApilotgirl, Max (in his hilarious pink outfit). Got our picture taken with a nice BT sign that Joanne had made. Karen, Vanessa and I lined up in the middle of the 9 minute pace corral and hit the start line about 40 seconds or so after the gun went off. Handled the first mile in 10:03 and Vanessa was gone after about 1/4 mile. Karen was about 25 yards ahead and gaining on me. Didn't want to try to keep her pace and kept moving along. Hit the 3 mile mark in 29:59. Caught Karen around 5 miles, tossed her my gloves wished her well and she headed right towards finish as I went left to finish the 1/2. Hit the 6 mile mark at 60:08. Miles 5- 7 were nice and scenic right along the ocean. Hit 8 miles in 80:20 still holding close to 10 minute pace. (My PR is 10:13 pace). Mile 8 started an up hill climb back into town and I started to tire. Water stop just before 9 mile mark and I walked the stop taking in water and downing my packet of carb boom Kiwi Strawberry. Hit 9 miles in 1:31:27. starting to slow about 9.5 and take a 1 minute walk break. Miles 10 - 12 saw 3 more walk breaks about 2 minutes each and slower running. Out of gas probably due to only running one 9.3 mile run and one 10 miler since Disney marathon on January 7th. Mile 12 did the first half mile at slow shuffle and then kicked it in for last .6 Final time 2:18 and some change (not sure as I forgot to stop the Garmin). Garmin did say I ran 13.28. What would you do differently?: Would have dressed cooler. After first 2 miles I wish I had on shorts and only 1 shirt, No hat. More longer runs in training. I was recovering from Disney and not ready to push the milage, looking back I wish I had done a couple of 14 milers leading up to race day. Post race
Warm down: None really, should have as calves are really sore today. Found my family and Vanessa finished in 1:01 (slowed last 2 miles - hmmm sounds familar). this is her first Race and never ran more than 3 miles until two weeks ago. Karen finished in 1:03 What limited your ability to perform faster: overheating, fatigue, weight, I wanted to get down to 190 and didn't. I am still at right around 200 pounds. I also probably started out to fast...should have stayed around 10:30 for first 3 then picked up pace to 10:15's for next 3 and then 10's and then see if I could finish strong....but I'm not that smart!! Event comments: Nice race, could have used a couple more aid stations. Had to wait in long, long line to get food after the race. had a great time meeting everyone and weather wasn't too bad. Woke up about 7:30AM and had a cup of Coffee, wheat bagel, water and 2 tylonel 8 hour tablets. Shower and light stretching out the door around 8:30.
Got to the Sheraton race headquarters and ate 1/2 a banana, stretched and out for a warm up run with wife Karen and daughter Vanessa who were running the 10K. Still cold at this time so back inside more stretching and chatting with other runners. Out to race start at 9:50 with the temps warming.
