Swim
Comments: The 10 second intervals between racers made for some backups along the course and people were not very good about letting others pass. Other than that, it seemed to go quite smoothly. What would you do differently?: The swim went well. About the only thing I'd like to see different is that I get better. Transition 1
Comments: There were basically 2 transition areas - one change tent out of the pool, then a 300 m run, then to where the bikes were racked. This really made being efficient difficult, which resulted in the long time noted. What would you do differently?: I'm going to get some tri shorts so I don't have to change after the swim, and I also should have just run in my bare feet instead of putting on runners, then taking them off again to put my bike shoes on. Bike
Comments: The bike was definitely my strongest leg. I was catching up to people who were out of the pool in the top 5, so I was pretty happy about that. What would you do differently?: I need to work on my cornering, but I think that will just get better as I become more comfortable on my bike. I was slowing down quite a bit for the turnarounds because it was wet and I'm not really sure of myself on the bike yet. Transition 2
Comments: I didn't try to jump off the bike with my shoes still in the pedals because I've never practiced it before, and I didn't think a wet road was the best place to learn. What would you do differently?: I just need to try and get comfortable with jumping on and off the bike, especially the dismount transition. Run
Comments: I got a calf cramp about 500 m into the run, which really slowed things down. I had to stop and stretch that out, but once I got running, I kept speeding up. What would you do differently?: The only thing I would change would be that I need to stretch out my legs on the last bit of the bike - especially my calfs. I think this would have helped my run a lot. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: I was lazy through the transitions, and the weather definitely didn't help, although everyone was equally affected by the conditions. I also need to work on my swim a lot still, and next time I'm going to stretch at the end of the bike leg to (hopefully) avoid the wicked calf cramp I got, which also slowed me down quite a bit. Event comments: As my first race, everything seemed to be well organized. There was also a tri/du expo at the finish line, which helped draw out the crowds on this miserable, rainy Vancouver day. Also, the transition times were included in our race times, so I had to use the times I kept as laps in my heart rate monitor to know what my actual times were for the individual legs and transitions (which I really need to work on).
