Swim
Comments: This was easily the worst part of my race. I went from freestyle to breast stroke to back stroke numerous times. I kind of freaked, the water was so different than swimming in the pool. I was honestly trying not to drown and just get through it. It was also the first time I swam with a wet suit which was also a struggle. What would you do differently?: I need to learn how to swim freestyle better and more efficiently. I will also try to do open water swims at least once a week. Transition 1
Comments: I was pretty exhausted after the swim so I really dragged in the transition. Having a bucket to clean my feet worked out nicely, but I should have sprayed my ankles with cooking spray to get off my wetsuit. I tried the whole keeping my cycling shoes on the bike and running bare feet. I wasn't a big fan of this and will switch it back to putting shoes on first for the next race. What would you do differently?: Being faster, using cooking spray on my legs to get my wet suit off, and finally putting my cycling shoes on in the transition area Bike
Comments: My bike time was 2nd in my age group, but a lot slower than I could have gone if I didn't kill myself in the swim. I think I was faster on my road bike the previous day checking out the course. I did pass a number of people, but my gears were skipping a little on the climbs which frustrated me. I loved the bike course, I just wished I had been able to go faster. I might have been better off doing it on my road bike just because it is so much lighter and easier to climb with. What would you do differently?: Get an aero drink system so I don't have to keep grabbing my bottle. Also, I will make sure my bike shifts and stays smooth in all gears before the race. Go faster... Transition 2
Comments: I thought this transition went pretty well. I almost forgot my number belt which would have been a nightmare. What would you do differently?: Nothing... Run
Comments: I think I had a strong run, I caught 3 people from my age group and passed a couple of others. My quads were starting to ache a little towards the end, but I finished strong. What would you do differently?: Try to eat a gel before the run for that extra little bit of energy. Post race
Warm down: Pretty much went through the finish and drank some water and gatorade. What limited your ability to perform faster: My lack of swim technique and experience. Even if I can become an average swimmer, I will be in top 3 because of my cycling ability. Event comments: I enjoyed this race and it was very organized. I just wished I had performed a little better. I will definitely be back again next year. Last updated: 2007-02-21 12:00 AM

Day lights savings time was a nightmare because I was paranoid I wasn't going to wake up in time. I didn't get to sleep until around 11:00 pm the previous evening even though I was exhausted, I was just excited, nervous and paranoid. The alarm went off at 5:15 AM and I managed to roll myself out of the bed and feed the animals. It was so foggy outside! I quickly got dressed and jumped into the car, plugged in my ipod and was off on the hour or so drive to the race. I did stopp at 7-Eleven for a caffeine wake-up. They have a new high energy coffee that is guarenteed to wake you up. I arrived at the race a little over an hour before the start which is good for me because I am usually late. I set up all my stuff in the transition and paced around looking for a free port-o-john. There was a lone one with no line hiding in the parking lot. That was like a gift from God :)
Walk from transition to beach and attempt to get my wet suit on. That was warm-up enough for me.
