Swim
Comments: I was really pleased with my swim and thought I paced myself correctly and had a good swim. What would you do differently?: Nothing, other than remember to turn on my stop watch. I finally remembered after the first 100 yards. Transition 1
Comments: I had a terrible transition. Of course, being my first, I guess this is expected, but it just took way to long to dry off, put on socks, shoes, shirt, glasses, helmet, etc. Definitely need to work on this portion of the race, as I was about a minute slower than most others in my group. What would you do differently?: Not dry off as much, quicker with helmet, shirt, shoes, etc. Just hurry and get going! Bike
Comments: I felt good about the pace, as I usually ride at between 14 and 15 mph. But, I train on hills more steep than these, so I guess that is expected. I definitely need to speed up on the bike and that will be a focus of my training for my next race. But, even though my performance wasn't great compared to others, I was personally pretty happy. I will say that even though my problem is more "the engine than the bike" I can tell that my 15+ year old Atala is not in the same league as most of the other bikes I saw. So, a bike is probably in my future in the next few months... What would you do differently?: Not a whole lot. Transition faster, but I was pretty happy with the race portion. Transition 2
Comments: I was faster in this transition, but I had a hard time getting into the run. I could be a little quicker here, but I was not nearly as slow as in T-1. What would you do differently?: Not much, just go a little faster. Run
Comments: When I began the run, two things were very apparent. 1) I hadn't had near enough WATER. and 2) I did not run near enough BRICKS in training. I could never get comfortable in my run, never established a pace, and was really thirsty for WATER. They had a lot of gatorade on the course, but I was craving water more than gatorade. I walked way to much on the course and could never get in a rhythm with my run. Poor, poor performance. What would you do differently?: Drink more water on the bike, do more bricks in training, and just find a pace that I can sustain and stay with it. Post race
Warm down: Immediately after the race I was spent. I laid down for about 5 minutes to catch my breath and get my wits about me. Then I felt fine and started walking around and drinking water. What limited your ability to perform faster: I still weigh too much for this sport, so losing weight will do wonders for my performance. Other than that, just the first time and not knowing what to expect. I will be more confident next time and I will have a new focus in training for my next race. Event comments: I don't have anything to compare to, but I thought the race was run well and very organized. I wish they would have had water in coolers to fill up my bike bottle before the race, but I couldn't find anything except Gatorade. The after-race baked potatos was a nice extra. No complaints at all about the race and the way it was run. I will definitely be back next year. Last updated: 2007-03-16 12:00 AM

Woke up at 4:00 AM. Ate oatmeal, banana, and gatorade on the way to Athens (about an hour drive) Got there in plenty of time to set up bike and transition area. Check in was very well organized and volunteers did a good job.
I didn't do a lot of warmup since I am used to swimming at 5:30 AM during the week without any warmup. Mainly, just stretched and jogged a little to get the blood flowing.
