Swim
Comments: This was the first time I've ever done a time-trial type start. Was very nice to keep the course less crowded. Now, back to the swim start..... Did my run into the water, dove in... was immediately "rewarded" with goggles full of water. WTH? I guess I didn't get a proper seal on them before I dove in. Dumped the water, wondered if I just dumped my contacts into the lake with the water, readjusted goggles, and off I went. About 2/3 into the swim, I realized I could still see, so all was good. What would you do differently?: Make sure my goggles are sealed properly before diving in... Transition 1
Comments: Time includes a fairly long jog up the beach, up some stairs, and around a building to transition. Kind of took my sweet time, too.... What would you do differently?: Maybe actually jog more to transition instead of using it as a breather... Bike
Comments: DH had said that he didn't remember this course being so hilly. Boy, was he ever wrong. I will NOT trust his memory again.... I averaged about 6-8 mph on the uphills but pushed it on the flats and downhills. My top speed was 36.8 mph. It was a very challenging course for me, especially since Lower AL doesn't have hills quite like this course had. Kind of hard to train on hills when there aren't any around... What would you do differently?: Train with more hills if I can find any. Transition 2
Comments: Don't remember anything special about this transition. Felt good. What would you do differently?: Um, nothing, I guess. Run
Comments: For every up there is a down... This was my mantra as I did this run. I race-walked the uphills and jogged the flats and downhills. When I hit the Mile 1 marker, I thought, GOOD GOD, that's IT????? About 1/2 mile from the end, right in front of the XTERRA expo tents, my right ankle rolled, causing me to splat on the pavement. I ran that last bit with bloody palms and blood running down my right knee/shin. Oh well, at least I finished. What would you do differently?: Not trip and fall. Post race
Warm down: Walked around, drank some water, ate some post-race PB&J, chips and a coke. Loaded the gear up in the car, and headed to the XTERRA expo to pick up race packets for the next day's race. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of any really serious training. Event comments: Team Magic puts on a great race. Will do this next year if the schedule permits. Woke up at 5am and ate some oatmeal and half a banana. Took 2 endurolytes and drank some water. Packed up the race bag and headed to the race site.
Walked around the beach, chatting with some friends, waiting for the race to start. Got in the lake and got wet a bit, but not much else.
