Swim
Comments: I moved up into the pack this year after starting at the back and working my way through the slower traffic. I think I started about where I should have as not a lot of people passed me and I didn’t pass many either. There seemed to be a lot of contact with other people (if anyone is reading this that I hit, sorry!) but over all started out fine. Before the 1st buoy I chocked on a mouthful of that tasty bay water which was a pleasant experience. After that, things seemed to settle down. I was trying to push my pace so about ½ the way through, the arms started to burn and struggled to keep a strong stroke the final 100. What would you do differently?: Not much to complain about here. I've been putting in lots of laps building base for the Olys coming up. After the SD, I'll start working on speed but for what I am doing workout wise and where I am physically, I am pretty pleased with the swim. Transition 1
Comments: unfortunatly I missed the lap button on my watch exiting T1 so don't have a split. What would you do differently?: Need to start wearing race shirt under the wetsuit. Always seems to roll up on my back when putting it on. Bike
Comments: Got on the bike and felt great and it’s the segment I am most pleased with. My speeds seemed to be constantly over 20 and I was passing people almost the entire ride. I cramped up at the start of the run last year so I knew I wanted to take in more fluids on the bike this year, especially after taking in a mouthful of bay water and was able to do that. As much as I would like to upgrade to a tri bike, I am really can’t complain about the Specialized Roubaix. What would you do differently?: Been putting in more rides of longer miles this year then last and I think it showed in this race compared to last years. Not sure I'd do much differently. Transition 2
Comments: T2 seemed to go smooth and really nothing to speak of. Run
Comments: Legs felt a bit tight and stomach felt a little “sloshy” at the start of the run. Was able to work that out after about ½ a mile and registered a 8:26 1st mile. Tried to stride out on the 2nd mile and actually felt pretty good and registered a 8:13 2nd mile. 3rd mile I was pretty much just trying to hang on. I’d go through time where I felt good and tried striding out followed by times thinking I was going to see breakfast again and had to back off but was still able to finish with a 8:22 final mile. What would you do differently?: This was a good run for my current conditioning. After finishing the run, I probably could have kept going so endurance is not the issue, speed is but I still need to continue to build base for the SD Oly and will start working on speed for the LA Tri. Post race
Warm down: Find a place to cool down with a bottle of water and a juice pouch for quick sugar. 1/4 mile walk back to car. What limited your ability to perform faster: Current physical condition and workout agenda. Need to build base over speed. Event comments: This is an excellent start to the season race. Short, no waves/current on the swim and a flat course. Well run and will again try to start next season off with this race. Last updated: 2007-03-30 12:00 AM

Came into this race treating it as “C” race with San Diego International (Olympic) being a “B” race and LA (Olympic) being the “A” race for the season.
I was kind of nervous before the race. I lost 2 moths of training at the beginning of the year due to injury so came into this race about 5 pounds heavier then last year. Additionally, I have not done any OW swims, brick workouts or even a transition practice and on top of that, my stomach has not been feeling well over the last 12 hours. Stomach problems could have been due to nerves over my concerns about the race but I was actually feeling pretty confident about doing the race so I doubt it.
Mike drove and we got to race later then last year so had to park in an auxillery lot and walk ¼ mile to transition. Basically had 10 minutes to setup transition, get body marked and get out of the transition area which was probably good because I wasn’t able to stand around worrying that I was forgetting something. They changed up the waves and had the female age flights alternate with the male flights meaning Mike would get a 10 minute head start instead of his usual 5.
