Pre-race routine:

My first triathlon. Went down to Galveston Friday night and woke up around 4:45 Sat morning. Had a protein/maltodextrin shake around 5:00. Got to the race around 6:00.
Event warmup:

None...next time I think a warm-up swim would be a good idea.
Swim
  • 10m 42s
  • 550 meters
  • 01m 57s / 100 meters
Comments:

This was the part I was most worried about after hearing so many stories about how rough the start can be. I got on the outside toward the middle of the pack and had almost no problems with traffic. Ended up coming out of the water 7th...WAY better than I would have guessed.
What would you do differently?:

swim warmup
Transition 1
  • 02m 36s
Comments:

I don't have clip pedals so I put on socks and running shoes in T1. I was a lot more relaxed than I thought I would be
Bike
  • 40m 5s
  • 12.5 miles
  • 18.71 mile/hr
Comments:

Oh, the dreaded bike. Definitely my weak link. I just started biking about 2 months ago so I haven't had much time in the saddle. It was a little disheartening having so many people blow by me on the bike course.
What would you do differently?:

MORE RIDING!!!
Transition 2
  • 00m 44s
Comments:

Already had the running shoes on so T2 was pretty quick.
Run
  • 20m 49s
  • 3 miles
  • 06m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

I was feeling pretty confident about my running in the weeks before the race but I got a rude awakening right out of T2. Right off the bat, I took some Gatorade and it went down the wrong pipe...not good. It took me about 2.5 miles to feel like I was able to breath comfortably. Don't know if it was conditioning, going to hard on the bike or the Gatorade choking (probably all three) but I felt like I wasn't getting any air. By the time I started to feel relatively comfortable, the race was over
Post race
Warm down:

none...big mistake. I was too busy recapping my first triathlon to my parents and friends that came to watch

What limited your ability to perform faster:

slow biking

Event comments:

Unfortunately, the heavens opened up and it POURED about 30 minutes after I finished. I felt bad for the poor people who started after me and were still on the course. I was looking forward to the post race activities (especially the free beer) but we ended up hiding in the car.
