Swim
Comments: Ugg! The water was sooooo cold. But, not as cold as it could have been. Near the beach, it wasn't very choppy, but as I got closer to the first buoy, it felt like trying to swim in the washing machine. Not fun. I managed to stick with it, slow as I was, and just finish. But, I swear, the last leg is in some kind of space/time continuum... no matter how much I swam, the shore never got any closer. What would you do differently?: Oh, I don't know... maybe do some swim workouts? Transition 1
Comments: I'm actually really happy with my T1 time, considering this is my first T1 with bike shoes! My wetsuit came off beautifully! I credit the thick, slippery Costco hair conditioner I slathered on my legs. Note to self: use that again. I even managed to run up the beach and into the transition area. What would you do differently?: Not much. Just be faster at each item. Bike
Comments: I had hoped to be faster than this. I even lost about two minutes trying to help two women with a flat, but even then I wouldn't have been fast enough to break the 15 mph avg barrier. Oh well. I was just happy to be out there with my new pedals and not be scared to death. So, that alone makes it a great success! There were points on the course that were a bit scary, to tell the truth. Esp the long straight-away where the wind was coming from a slight angle. I nearly lost it at least once along there. And other places along the course, when I got to the top of little hills, the wind would catch me off guard. I'm happy that I was able to unclip at each of the turnarounds, and the one time I stopped on the course. What would you do differently?: Feel more comfortable with my pedals and ride harder. Transition 2
Comments: First time using Yankz, and it seemed to work fine. I forgot to lap my watch as I was coming in, so this is a guess for time. What would you do differently?: Run out faster with my race belt, rather than stand there talking to Eric while putting it on. Run
Comments: Uggg! This run sucked. Fortunately, much of it was in the shade, as the sun was out. But, since they changed the course, it was much harder than it usually is. Lots of very steep uphills, followed by steep downhills. I wound up walking the uphills to save my HR, and then walking the downhills to save my ankles. Maybe it's because of my hard workouts late in the week, but I couldn't seem to push harder than about 174 bpm on the run. And there was lots and lots of poison oak to be avoided. What would you do differently?: Train more on hills? Be less chicken? Post race
Warm down: Walk around looking for Eric, chatting with friends. Gathered my stuff, hung out to hear I didn't place (oh well), and then headed off for yummy Mexican food! What limited your ability to perform faster: I was treating this like a training race, so I let myself off the hook a couple of times when I could have pushed a bit harder. Event comments: Everyone knows I love the TBF folks. Last updated: 2007-04-16 12:00 AM

Got up early and drove to Sac. Got set up, met up with a couple of online friends (couldn't find Brad, though). Tried not to think about the race much.
Just swam a bit, but nothing else.
