Pre-race routine:

Woke up, had Ensure and smoothie for breakfast. Tried some healthy pancakes but couldn't stomach it. banana an hour or so before the race.
Event warmup:

Not much. Quick stretch and a swim to the start where we sat in the water for 10minutes.
Swim
  • 58m 58s
  • 3862 meters
  • 01m 32s / 100 meters
Comments:

I was happy with the swim. I started fast and didn't bother trying to draft. Basically swam my own race the whole way, drafting in the murky water would have been pointless anyway. Started close to the far outside and gradually made my way over to the inside.
Transition 1
  • 04m 20s
Comments:

This was a long transition..had to run way the hell up to the top of the bike bags...run further..get changed...run to bike..run to bike start.

I wasn't thinking of the wetsuit strippers and was ready by the time I got to them. No big deal..couple seconds lost at worst
Bike
  • 5h 08m 30s
  • 180.25 kms
  • 35.06 km/hr
Comments:

I'm relatively happy with the bike. Goal was sub 5hrs, but given the wind there's not much I could have done better. I didn't push it too hard, legs felt good. made sure to eat and drink lots. Also took a ton of electrolytes to avoid the stomach/heat stroke issues I"ve had in past races.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, pretty satisfied with that ride for an April race in crazy winds.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Changed my jersey into a running singlet. Definitely do this again. It was great to have an loose fitting jersey for air flow during the run.
Run
  • 3h 55m 18s
  • 42.16 kms
  • 05m 35s  min/km
Comments:

I just can't figure out the run. I do so well for the first half, but then absolutely crack and end up walking the remaining 15km's. This time it was not an energy issue, my legs just didn't have it. The quads were in so much pain. Quite a dissapointment after the winters run training I put in. All those long 2.5hr runs seemed to be for not.
What would you do differently?:

I don't know. Frustrating. Food? Hydration? too hard on the bike? maybe it was just too early in the year for an Ironman. All well, try again in August.

Event comments:

I didn't like the bike course.
