Swim
Comments: Ocean swim that was very rough. High waves and at many points I couldn't see another person in the ocean. The swim back to shore was of course easier because of the waves, but I ended up way to far down beach. Very choppy, yet could have been much worse. Ultimately the worse thing and it cost me 2 minutes if not more was swimming to far out into to ocean after reaching the first buoy. One of these days I'll have a good swim in a competition. What would you do differently?: Learn ocean swimming better, practice it more. Transition 1
Comments: No wetsuit What would you do differently?: At this point now that I know I am competitive in my age group I think I need to attach my bike shoes to my bike; were talking a whole 5 seconds right... Bike
Comments: The course was very flat and I made up a lot of time after a sub-par swim. I passed more than 15 people and did the course in 1:06:00. As in my last race though I could have pushed much harder. What would you do differently?: Push harder Transition 2
Comments: This really pisses me off: When I got to the transition area there were only 10 or so bikes there and the two on the opposite sides of me were both taking up the whole rack. Being fairly new to triathlon and not knowing all the rules I set my bike on the side of the transition rail. Later I found out this cost me a two minute penalty which ended up costing me about 7 positions overall. I talked to the ref and he said that I should have placed it on another rack, but to me that makes no sense as then I would have taken up the space of someone else. I dont know the right answer, but was quite upset....my competitive nature. What would you do differently?: Move the bike that was cockeyed (it would have only cost me 10 seconds at the most) Run
Comments: A good run, but man did I feel like I was going slow. I guess in the end I paced myself right, but as always I feel like I should go at my normal 38 minute or below 10K pace....of course this isn't with the swim and bike portion added on. Plenty of water points. I didn't drink anything, but poured it on me to wash away body salt and salt coming from the ocean. What would you do differently?: I should have pushed a little harder as when the raced finished I had some left. Post race
Warm down: My wife was at the race which was nice. I spent some time with her and my parents who happened to be there as well. Ate a bagel and drank some water. This may be random for some, but I chew tabaco0 (It's the Soldier in me) and I took one too soon after the race and thought I would pass out. If you smoke (which I doubt in this sport, or chew don't do it after a race. What limited your ability to perform faster: I don't think my mental drive equaled my physical capability. Event comments: Good race; 2 hours 17 minutes not counting the 2 minute penalty. Good enough for second in my age group and top 20 overall. The two minute penalty cost me at least 6 overall positions, so not a bad race. Being that I dragged my wife to the race and I live over 3 hours away I decided to turn the race weekend into a vacation. I got a hotel for Saturday night as well and spent the rest of Saturday and Sunday relaxing on the beach. I recommend the race in this sense to anyone. The race was run very well and I was very pleased. Last updated: 2007-04-23 12:00 AM
