Run
Comments: No rank info per event is available (bummer) What would you do differently?: More training. I pretty much went into this cold without much training Transition 1
Comments: I have no clue how I had a three minute transition....the only explanation I have is that since I had my HR up to 195 at the end of the run, that I was walking a bit slower than usual through transition. I got my shoes switched quickly, and my bike was right by the bike start. What would you do differently?: Not run so damn hard at the end of the run so I can get to my bike faster Bike
Comments: I lost a lot of time because it wasn't clear where to go on a few of the turns. There was a lot of road construction, so there were cones EVERYWHERE and it made it hard. The last big downhill (where I hit a max speed of 39.4), I couldn't tell which way to go, so I had to hard brake to be able to get back on the course...I had enough momentum that I could have been able to coast back into transition. I also ran out of water :-( On the first lap, I got a pretty bad cramp in my right gastroc which I couldn't get to go away. I got it somewhat stretched out so it wasn't as bad, but it persisted throughout the second run. On a couple of the hills, I was literally praying to be able to finish (I ran out of water and my gel fell out of my jersey pocket). What would you do differently?: More hill training, especially on this course. Figure out a way to rig another water bottle to my bike. Not lose my gel on the course (stomach growling and starting to feel a bit like bonking) Transition 2
Comments: The women next to me in transition didn't leave much room for my bike, so I had issues putting my bike on the rack. I did manage to get one foot out of the shoe and ride with my foot on the shoe...so I'm starting to do "real" triathlete stuff. What would you do differently?: Keep working on riding with feet on shoes. Run
Comments: Cramp in right gastroc didn't go away, but it wasn't too severe. My HR wasn't as high as the first run, mainly because my legs were TIRED after the bike. I'm really surprised that my second run was only a couple minutes slower than the first. My stomach was starting to get wonky the last half mile, which sucked. I did run to the finish line (not a long distance because the legs didn't want to cooperate). What would you do differently?: More training Post race
Warm down: Lots of walking around, signed up for a massage, eating, going to the Biffy. What limited your ability to perform faster: The race was the day after Yom Kippur. Fasting is not compatible with race nutrition. Event comments: The bike course should have been better marked, especially with the road construction. All of the side roads had police officers, which was good, but the turns and lane changes were hard to see because the course cones were the same as the road construction cones. I'm still a little pissy about only having packet pickup on Saturday. I had to leave Yom Kippur services to get my packet and I would have appreciated the option to get my packet that morning.
