Swim
Comments: Great swim for me, absolutely improved my time from last year. I started at the front this year, since I didn't want to give 20-30 seconds right off the bat. What would you do differently?: I shaved 7 minutes off last year's time, so I was very happy with my time. If I could do anything differently, I'd just push harder. Transition 1
Comments: I got into T1 fast after the swim, as it was only a 25 yard run. I had some trouble getting my wetsuit off, and it took a minute longer than I would have liked. What would you do differently?: Take my wetsuit top off as I come out of the water. I think I wasted 25 seconds on that in T1. Bike
Comments: A very good performance for me; shaved off over 8 minutes from this race last Fall. It's a tricky ride, as there's a huge long hill about 2 miles into it, and I had a hard time getting my heartrate down before I hit the hill. I passed about 10 guys on the hill and was passed by 2 (1 of whom I ended up dueling the whole way). I maintained a good pace and was passed by some guys on serious bikes, but I feel good about it. In retrospect, I know where I need to improve. Kept charging right to the end and passed a guy 10 feet from the mat, so that was cool. What would you do differently?: Kept the hammer down on the flats more. I really gave all I had, though, so I'm content with my performance. 14 of 35 isn't bad for my 3rd tri. Transition 2
Comments: Good transition, couldn't really have done it faster. Didn't rest at all. Run
Comments: Ouch. Literally. My right calf/achilles twinged leaving the transition area and I knew I'd be in for some pain. My goal had been to run sub 8-minute miles, but I really struggled. The terrain was "packed" earth, but in reality it was sand, which made it even more tough on a gimpy calf. I'd never run on dirt before. There was a huge hill at the 1/2 way point which was very challenging. I did manage to speed up the last mile and out-sprinted a guy at the mat, which made me happy. Overall a disappointing run. I hadn't run in a month, in hopes my calf would be fit, so we'll have to see what I can do before my next race in 3 weeks. What would you do differently?: Have a healthy calf. Other than that, I pushed it as hard as I could. Post race
Warm down: Ate some grapes and kissed my wife and son. What limited your ability to perform faster: I performed up to my ability in the swim and bike; my calf hampered me from running as fast as I was able. Event comments: This was the best of my 3 tris. I did this same course in September, and I was 13:24 faster this time. Set PR in swim and bike. Swam with a wetsuit for the first time and absolutely loved it. I was concerned about feeling claustrophobic, etc., but had no issues at all. Last updated: 2007-05-07 12:00 AM

Woke up at 5am, ate a piece of wheat bread and peanut butter. Got to the race about 6:30, watched Olympic start and relaxed until my wave.
I swam for about 10 minutes off to the side. The water was kind of cold, so I wanted to get my face used to it. My new wetsuit was incredible, though. I didn't feel cold at all during the racce.
