Swim
Comments: ABQKid and I got to the back behind everyone. When the gun went off we walked into the water and continued walking until the water got too deep, then we started swimming. Just tried to stay real comfortable and not push it at all. Seemed to sight pretty well and for the most part I swam alone. For some reason the swim seemed much longer than my time. What would you do differently?: I think if I had started up front and pushed it harder, I could have maybe cut a couple minutes off. Transition 1
Comments: I got to transition and pulled my suit off and it got stuck on my heels (forgot the pam spray). Once I got my suit off, I put on my shoes, helmet, number belt and sunglasses quickly, and off I went to see what these hills I'd been hearing about were all about. What would you do differently?: Put pam or body glide on my ankles so my wetsuit wouldn't get stuck, the rest went really good. Bike
Comments: Immediately out of transition you have 7.5% climb, so you must have your bike in an easy gear in transition. I spun up the hill and passed a few people and thought that wasn't that bad. There are 8 big hills on the course and a couple of fast downhills. A few of the climbs were on very sharp winding roads so you couldn't really take advantage of the downhill as you had to ride the brakes to not fly off the road. I stayed comfortable the whole ride and passed a lot of people on the hills, so I was very happy with my ride. What would you do differently?: Again could have pushed harder. Several time I would catch a group and think, hurry up pass them. Then I would have to remind myself that my goal is to stay comfortable all day. Transition 2
Comments: Got to transition and ran down the wrong row...DOH! Circled around found my spot and racked the bike. Put on socks and shoes grabbed my visor and off I went. What would you do differently?: Actually pay attention when entering transition to the large obvious numbers on the side of the rows of racks. Run
Comments: I was dreading the run all day, as it's the part I like the least. As I started running my legs felt pretty good, but my stomach was cramping a little. It felt as if I had taken in too much fluid. I kept thinking that I needed to stop drinking, but I was afraid to dehydrate so I kept alternating water and gatorade at the aide stations and the cramps continued. Again the goal was to stay comfortable so I alternated running and walking. The run is challenging, and the hills are steep but short. What would you do differently?: Figure out the cramping thing. Don't know if it was too much fluid, not enough fluid or salt. I'll have to talk to my coach about it. Post race
Warm down: Crossed the finish line, took my picture and found ABQKid. We sat in the lake for a few minutes then started packing up to drive home. What limited your ability to perform faster: If this had been an A race, I would have pushed every event harder, especially the run. I think I could have cut several minutes off. Event comments: The volunteers were great and the race is well organized. We got very lucky with the weather, if it had been normal Lubbock hot and humid weather this race could be a beast. If you're looking for a challenging half to do, this is the race for you. Last updated: 2007-05-10 12:00 AM

ABQKid and I got up at 4 gathered our things, made a bagel with peanut butter and met another teammate GI Jane at the truck. We loaded up and headed out a little before 5. Got to the park entrance and the line of cars was enormous.
We were in line forever. By the time we got into the park, parked the truck and walked the 1/4 mile to transition, we had less than 30 minutes to our race start. I setup transition, stood in line for the restroom until about 5 minutes before start then just ran to the beach. ABQKid helped me pull on my wetsuit and we got in the water then back on the beach for the start.
This race was not an A race, so my coach wanted me to treat it as a long training session, and the goal was to stay comfortable all day.
