Swim
Comments: my goal for this swim was 33min. I came out of the water in 33:50. Rough start. I was about a row back and it really got bunched up for the fist few 100m. I tried to grab feet from time-to-time but they were slow. Swam inside mostly and got caught a few times going too far to the left, but not terrible. I was really supprised when I stood up and looked at my watch because I felt I was holding a strong pace - I guess it was just too comfortable. What would you do differently?: need to swim a straighter line. need to find good feet to hold onto. Transition 1
Comments: I budget'd 4min for the T's this race and ended up doing close to 5. I certainly took my time and went through both with little urgency, and the times showed this. This t I spent a few seconds putting my watch onto my aerobars and a bit too much time with the shoes What would you do differently?: go faster. I always say this and have yet to come into a race with it being a priority Bike
Comments: very solid ride for me. my goal was to ave 21mph. It took me a few miles to get my hr down into z2. I did spend a lot of time in z3 but I really felt good so I wasn't worried too much about it. I really enjoyed both laps: didn't feel too much discomfort, didn't have to work mentally to keep myself at pace (last year I had to fight through my second lap). Spent most of my focus trying not to draft and sticking to a nutrition/hydration plan. Had a gu about every 20min (5 total) and then shot bloks at the last two aid stations. Took on ~30oz of g-ade on the ride and ~40oz water. At ~30min left took on a bit more water, held a bit stronger effort, and started to mentally get myself prepared for the run What would you do differently?: if anything not hit z3 as much until the end of the last lap. Transition 2
Comments: not lightening fast. meandered through this one. put sunblock on. What would you do differently?: go through with a stronger sense of urgency. Run
Comments: realy felt good coming out of T2 (pretty fresh, legs felt awesome, felt hydrated and fueled). Hit the johnny about 1/4mi out of t2 since they were vacated. Felt like I was on pace pretty early and caught myself a few times in the 1st 5k dialing the pace back. Most of my focus was hitting the first lap at 4h 10m total race time and making sure I stayed fueled. Had a gu at the 2nd station and about every 3rd after that. Had mostly water. First lap was awesome and I was on target to hit 5hr. thought started to pick up the pace just a bit but my main goal was to stay on pace and feel good for a strong final 5k. got a few chills and a head ache around miles 7/8/9 and my stomach was telling me something, but I don't know what. It felt bloated but I didn't want to stop drinking, so I just stuck with a few sips of water for the rest of the race and hope it would pass/settle. in all this trouble-shooting I kinda lost pace. looked down at 5k to go and my watch said 4h 37m. Uh oh! picked it up immediately but not too strong too fast. gradually picked up the pacing coming across the damn and had a solid pace on the pavement into the finish line. missed 5hs but I was pretty happy. Pretty much enjoyed the entire day. What would you do differently?: I'm embarassed to say that I did the entire run in z2 with the exception of the last few miles. I really should taken the risk and pushed more on the last lap. I ran in my trail racing flats, which aren't breathable. My feet were sloshing around in them at the end of the race, mainly from all the water I was pooring over me draining down my legs into my shoes. I'll wear better flats next time. Post race
Warm down: a lot of water. What limited your ability to perform faster: mental focus. Event comments: very good event. The weather would really have been a lot worse. Well organized and great volunteers. I'm sorry I didn't stick around to socialize with all the BT'ers. There are so many of you I haven't met. We pawned our 20mo old and 3mo old onto our friends so my wife could enjoy the morning out on the Res. Its been the first time since our youngest was born that we've had sitters for both so we took advantage of the solitude and I took my wife out to lunch. Last updated: 2007-05-17 12:00 AM

Woke up at 4 after having a very solid 5hrs of sleep. Best night sleep before a race in a long time. Not real motivated to be up though and certainly wasn't motivated to go race. I just plugging through my routine knowing that once the gun went off I'd be in my zone and enjoying it. bagel w/pb and a gu for a few extra calories. took the dog out for a walk and was onto the Res about 4:45.
just a swim for warmup. Out and back twice then over to join the red-cappers.
