Swim
Comments: Seeded myself in the front left directly behind a chick who looked to be a strong swimmer. My guess is she is/was a lifeguard as she was yelling and waving to another guard on a surf board. They counted down after Sally Edwards pumped up the group...and we were off! I managed to hang with the chick to the first buoy drafting off her the whole way. Not sure how it happened, but I lost her. My navigation was great and I felt good. After turning left at the buoy, we were aiming straight into the sun. I managed to find the next buoy before turning left again and heading for the shore. As I was ending the swim, I saw a bunch of people walking through waist deep water...I kept on swimming until my hands hit bottom which helped me sneak by a few more people. What would you do differently?: Nothing...I felt strong the whole swim. My pace and navigation was on and I finished strong. Transition 1
Comments: T1 was shorter this year vs. two years ago. The run was on pavement into the TA and then on sand/grass. I heard Brad and Mike cheering and yelling as I ran by. I wasily slipped my wetsuit off and decided not to clean off my feet. On with the shoes, helmet and glasses, grab the bike and I was off. What would you do differently?: Maybe clean off my feet, but honestly it didn't bother me that I didn't. And it would have cost me some time. Bike
Comments: Bike started off a little interesting. The chip mat area was super sandy/dirty and then upon getting to the "mount line", people decided to stop before that to get on their bikes. Almost mowed over a woman (by accident) trying to get around her as she suddenly stopped. I heard Brad and Mike yelling as I got on the bike and moving. I had a little bit of difficulty clipping in due to the sand/dirt in my cleats. After navigating through the patch of the course with rocks/sand, I was off. There was a nice tailwind on the way out and I felt comfortable. I yelled for Julie and then Karen found me as they were on the other side. I hit the turn around and the headwind. I took a GU at about 7 miles. Before I knew it, I was back to the crowds of people and the transition area. What would you do differently?: Push myself harder. I feel like I could have gone faster, but I didn't want to blow up and have nothing left for the run. Transition 2
Comments: I was going sockless for this race and decided to try out an idea Laura gave me...to body glide your insoles of your sneakers and the heel area. When I put on my shoes, it felt so gross at first, but I quickly got used to it/forgot about it. On with the race belt and visor, grabbed by H2O bottle and I was off. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: Felt pretty good right off the bat. I knew I was going hard, but it wasn't to the point of being uncomfortable. Since I carried my own water bottle, I was able to sip it when I needed it. I saw Brad and Mike very early on the run which was great! I kept looking for Julie and Karen, but never saw them due to the two different out and backs. I hit the first mile marker and saw it was 9:00 even! WOO HOO! I managed to get into a rhythm of breathing with my foot strikes and concentrated on keeping my cadence high. I hit mile 2 and my split was 9:11. OK, just one more mile! As I neared the finish line, I saw Mike on the right and Brad on the left cheering. Brad yelled to turn it on since the finish line was right around the corner. I did just that and realized the finish line was further than I thought. I had to dial it back a bit. I waited until the finish line was in sight before having a strong final kick to the finish. Last 1.1 split was 9:18 What would you do differently?: Nothing at all...kick ass run for me and actually set a PR for a 5K! Post race
Warm down: Grabbed and chugged some water. Karen and Julie first found me where we congratulated eachother and compared times. Brad and Mike then found us. We grabbed some food, found out Julie won a raffle prize (a diamond star necklace), and then packed up the TA area. We had to check the results before leaving since Karen did so well (1:12:06 for her first tri...she ended up 8th in our AG). What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of time in the pool and/or short-fast training on the bike/in the pool. Although I will say, I think this speed work thing is actually working! Event comments: Being an all women's race and Karen's first tri, it was a fabulous day! The scene of an all women's race is so great! I had a blast racing with Karen and Julie and managed to improve from two years ago! The expo is pretty good and Sally Edwards is very inspiring and motivational. It's great this is a local race in the sense that we can stay at Karen and Mike's. I think we'll be adding this to the seasonal race calendar. Last updated: 2007-05-20 12:00 AM

The fun started on Saturday when Karen and I headed to the race expo...and we met Julie there for the race meeting and checkin. As Karen went to the first timer's meeting, Julie and I made our rounds at the expo. The rest of the day was spent hanging out and walking to Vic's for dinner. YUM!
Race morning, we were up at 4 to make breakfast (coffee and english muffins with PB). We also made some PB&J sandwiches for post race. Despite Brad and Mike drinking lots of rum last night and grumbling about our 4am wake up, they were great and we were all ready to go by 4:40am. We bundled up since it was hovering around 50 degrees! YIKES! We arrived at the park at around 5:15. We fumbled around in the dark for a bit and finally got our tires pumped. We decided to leave so early so we could park in one of the lots close by and not have to deal with the shuttles. We walked over to the security check in since it was on Coast Guard grounds. We all waited in our own lines according to the first letter of our last names. The line was SLOW moving and we ended up waiting in line for over 30 minutes. I got into the transition area and found the rack with my wave number on it. After finding an empty spot, I set up my TA and found Karen to give her a hand with her set up. We talked to Mike and Brad for a bit before meeting up with Julie. They were starting the race late due to the long lines at check in. We gathered our swim necessities, said our goodbyes to Brad and Mike and went over to watch the swimmers go off and finish.
Not much of a warm up...it was pretty chilly in the AM. Karen, Julie and I found a good spot to watch the swimmers come in. Julie was in wave 8 so we said our good lucks and she was off. Karen and I found a less-traveled bunch of sand to wizz in our wetsuits prior to the swim start. She was in wave 10 and I was in 11 so we said our good lucks and separated.
