Pre-race routine:

Many, many visits to the Port-o-lets.
Event warmup:

Stretching.
Swim
  • 48m 27s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 17s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good pacing throughout the swim. Was never gasping for breath or panicking, which ios an improvement overall my last race. Form fell apart the last 20% or so of the swim as I started to tire out.
What would you do differently?:

I would like to have shaved off about 4-5 minutes from my swim time, which would definitely be attainable.
Transition 1
  • 04m 51s
Comments:

Stopped at port-o-let to drain some fluids.
What would you do differently?:

Avoid the bathroom if possible
Bike
  • 2h 51m
  • 56 miles
  • 19.65 mile/hr
Comments:

This was a great course. Really enjoyed it.
What would you do differently?:

I would not lose my chain.
Transition 2
  • 02m 58s
Comments:

Used the toilet again to drain some fluids. Quick about it though.
What would you do differently?:

Not use the bathroom if I could avoid it (without going in my shorts, like some people do. Not my cup of tea.
Run
  • 2h 25m 41s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

This was my second 1/2 ironman. The first one I had to walk quite a bit more. Overall 2:25 not bad. 1/2 marathon time was 1:58:00 when doing the run alone in 60 degree wether.
What would you do differently?:

Try to get my 1/2 marathon time to 10 minutes/mile pace
Post race
Warm down:

Just some light stretches.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Did not train enough for the event. My goal is to get a sub 6 hour half ironman and I think I can do that with more training.

Event comments:

All they had to eat after the race was pizza and that ran out right after I got mine. There were still a lot of athletes that hadn't finished the race yet. Only water to drink. No gatorade, no fruit. Very dissappointed with the variety of nourishment. Good giveaways though. Finisher T-shirt, nice medal, Ironman tote bag, running cap. Very impressed with the schwag they gave out.

Course: A single-loop course with a few out-and back stretches. There were 3 water hand-off stations. There were some grade climbs and a number of hills to climb, nothing too treacherous though. THis was my first race, and only my 3rd time ever, riding my new Litespeed titanium tri bike. What a difference. I never felt like I was hitting a wall. Towards the end, felt a little tired but didn't burn out. Chain fell off while climbing one of the larger hills, was able to put it back on pretty quickly and probably only lost about a minute. There were a few times when I had a really good cadence going and had to break because the road went down to 2 lanes for a short time and I could pass bikers because there was no room between the cars and bikes. Not good.

Course: 3 loop course. A large portion of it was off-road through back trails with grass and dirt. There was some dirt kicked up into the air in some places, which you unavoidably inhaled which was not good. Water stations about every mile. They had coke, gatorade, water, ice, water sponges. Took a coke and water at every station. Gels 2 or 3 times.
