Pre-race routine:

Event warmup:

Some strides and a little swimming
Swim
  • 45m 16s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 08s / 100 yards
Comments:

Lots of seaweed in the lake. It would catch on my ankle strap with the time chip, or just wrap around my neck and shoulders. Did exactly what I predicted, 45mins, I just guessed a slow time and I guessed right!
What would you do differently?:

Learn to swim.
Transition 1
  • 02m 39s
Comments:

I didn't have a tri-suit so I had to change out of my jammers and into biking shorts which added some time. And I put my helmet on backwards which my wife had to point out.
What would you do differently?:

Clip in faster
Bike
  • 2h 58m 41s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.80 mile/hr
Comments:

I had a great bike leg. My goal was to break 3 hours and I did. Sadly I payed for it on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Go slower. I read this a million times, don't go to hard on the bike but i didnt listen. Mostly because on my Olympic/sprint distance tri's I just went all out on the bike and had plenty for the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

This Transition was awesome, i can in flying with my feet on top of my shoes, I saw some guy about to yell at me when I jump off right before the dismount line. It was awesome.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 2h 41m 18s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 12m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

After about a mile I got my first quad crap. Once I stretched that out I could barely run because my back was so tight. I rode on the drops of my bike which I never do in training. I didnt hurt anything but after a swim and 3hrs on the bike it was just super super tight until about mile 6. I kept stopping to stretch it out. After mile 6 my back loosened up a bit while everything on my legs got tight. Numerous calve and quad cramps kept me walking or standing around with one leg in the air.
What would you do differently?:

Take it easy on the bike
Post race
Warm down:

Pizza

What limited your ability to perform faster:

If I would have rode slower on the bike I could have dropped my runtime a lot. The biggest limiter was my training prior to the race. I was doing base training for the marathon plus some swimming and hadn't started biking until 3 weeks before the race. So although I can run lots of miles at a descent pace, I couldn't do it after a 56 mile bike ride.

Event comments:

Awesome volunteers. Awesome race course. Bad weeds in the lake
