Swim
Comments: Once i got into the water i started my slow survival swim. As planned i stayed about 60 ft or so off the buoys to avoid as much body contact as possible. I used the out portion to relax. The second part, and trip in were ok but slow. At that point i knew i would finish....eventually.A little choppy on the way back to shore, but standing up on the beach and trotting to transition felt like victory. What would you do differently?: Learn to swim in open water dummy!! Transition 1
Comments: No problem here. I practiced transitions at least 10 times. What would you do differently?: Nothing Bike
Comments: This was a victory lap after the swim. I rode at a pretty even pace the whole time. I train near a lake so the wind wasn't really that bad for me. I rode the north end of the course-from herzog to reams rd. last week so i new the turns, elevation changes and surface changes already. Just enjoyed it and prepared my self for the run. What would you do differently?: train to ride 20+mph avg. Transition 2
Comments: Smooth change over and a quick trip to the porto potty and i was off. What would you do differently?: nada Run
Comments: Oh well, walked and jogged as i felt like. I just wanted to finish. Made some friends and exchanged incouragements. It seems like it was over faster than it was. Post race
Warm down: Finished , picked up my bike and gear, and headed home. Back to reality. What limited your ability to perform faster: Training Event comments: The volunteers and crowd were great. calling us by name was nice. Last updated: 2007-05-22 12:00 AM

Registered on friday at 12:30....oh good, i'm in the water early at 6:35am. That will give more people time to run me over. Good sleep that night knowing i wouldn't sleep well on sat.
Woke up saturday and drove to Lucky"s for 7:20 swim. Exchanged hello's here and there but didn't introduce myself.I guess i was a little intimidated by everyone, they looked so relaxed and experienced. I felt like the odd man out.The swim was my first open water swim EVER, and boy did it show. Could not swim in a straight line to save my life. head above water the whole time.35 minutes later safe back at lucky's. I talked to a guy just learing to swim. He goes out a little father each week...i really admired him.I signed lucky's wall as a first timer and left thinking " oh my god, i've got to swim twice this far tomorrow....in a pack of wolves".
Slept little sat. night, but expected that. I was terrified of the swim.
Got up at 3am and pulled up the race site "Athlete Tracker" page for my family to see when they woke up. Got my gear togrther, did one last inventory, and was out the door. It is nice to live only a half hour from the race.
When i got to the transition area, it was already abuzz with people scurring around staging gear, getting body marked, and pumping tires like crazy.
NOW i'm really nervous. i set up my transition area just like the books i've read told me to. Then i got body marked and waited around nervously for 30 minutes.
Well i started with some light nervous breathing, followed by some static strething- frozen in fear, and completed my warm up with chattering teeth to the tune of the national anthem.Entered the stageing area with the other M40-44 looking like a cow entering the slaughter house.
