Swim
Comments: From the start to the first bouy it was vaguely reminiscent of IM. There was a pair of guys in wetsuits who when they swam were faster than me, but then insisted on stopping to do the breast stroke to spot the bouy. To make it worse they kept closing in on either side of me in a V, so there was no getting out. I finnaly just got frustrated and hammered it out of there. Once I rounded the first bouy it was smooth sailing. I found a good guy doing a moderately easy pace for me, and hung out on his toes for most of the second leg. He started to slow up towards the end of that leg, and I cought onto another bunch as they passed us. I think I had a consistently good draft for 2/3 of the swim. What would you do differently?: Very little. If I hadn't had to struggle as much on the first leg, then I might have pushed harder, but those were events out of my control. Transition 1
Comments: The only trick to this T1 was making sure you had everything you left in the trash bag. They were collecting everything and taking it over to T2 after the race, so if it wasn't in a bag it was going to be lost. Bike
Comments: I love rolling hills. So many people don't know how to build momentum on downhills when there's a big hill right in front of them. I would fly by people on the downhills as they coasted along, probably thinking, "Wow that's a big hill coming up. I'd better save my legs." In the mean time I'd coast halfway up that hill before having to get out of the big ring. it's a good feeling. The last 2 hills were classic grinders, however, and a bunch caught up to me on the last one. I had made a conscious decision to save the legs for the run on the last hill, so I just threw it in granny gear straight away and spun my way up. What would you do differently?: Maybe pushed harder on the last hill. Saving the legs didn't seem to help much. Transition 2
Comments: This was the most service I've ever received at a sprint tri. People got me my T2 bag, took my bike, and collected my bag once I had everything back together. What would you do differently?: Keep practicing to make it quicker Run
Comments: Thank god for downhills. I barely kept the hr under control going down the trail. Going up was impossible to keep up a run. The trail was very technically challenging. Brian said that he taped up his ankles and got trail runnning shoes for this. He had the right idea. Once we hit the road I was thnkful for pavement. I managed to run pretty well for the last mile. (Day after race perspective: I hurt in places on my calves I didn't know worked. All the added support I had to add to compensate for rolling this way and that on the rocks really worked out the sides of my legs.) What would you do differently?: Practice trail running. Post race
Warm down: Red Bull and Otterpops, stand around for an hour and a half, then hiked a 1mi trail back to the car. Event comments: This is a highly reccomended race in my book. The organized has it together. Logistically there is room for improvement (The captive audience factor during the awards was a bit of a dirty trick, and better planning for shuttle busses would have been good.) But the volunteers and aid in getting out stuff after the race was phenomenal. Last updated: 2007-05-29 12:00 AM

The usual routine. I got everything staged and ready to go the day before, ate early, got to bed early, morning oatmeal and coffee, etc.
I had to drive a good 1hr 15min to this event, so that meant leaving the house by 5. I got there in good time, and found parking in the fireman's cove dirt lot they had reserved for the event. Since this was a point to point with provided trash (I mean transition) bags, I didn't have my usual bag, so I pumped up the tires at the car and left as much as possible in the car.
At transition everything was pretty organized. This race director seems to have a good ability to think on his feet. When he realized that people would need their car keys after the race he immediately sent someone around with a bucket to collect them. I thought ahead and only brought the remote for my car and put that in my shirt at T1.
I tried to walk around T1 as much as I could to get the lay of the land. It was lucky I did because I noticed some prime bike spots closer to the water (less running in bare feet). I moved all my stuff there and headed for the water.
Once in the water I met up with Brian (BHannahs) and we swam over to the start bouy. We had to tread water there for a few mins while people crowded in.
