Swim
Comments: The swim started about 100 feet from the water so we had to run in. I have always done tris that have you start standing in the water already. Waiting on the beach for my wave to start was torture because it was very hot in the wetsuit! I got kicked in the side of my head right off the bat. I had a little trouble breathing after rounding the first buoy. Usually that's when I begin to feel better. This happens to me sometimes. I do a practice swim...feel great and then when the actual swim happens I feel crappy...anxiety? What would you do differently?: I guess I need to get used to people swimming into me and getting kicked in the face and all that. Transition 1
Comments: not too bad for me Bike
Comments: Online the results say 37:58. Since I have never averaged 19.7 before I don't believe it....never mind they fixed the result online. Now is says 41.37 My bike computer says 17.4 for 12.35 miles which is more likely. There were lots of folks that didn't know about keeping to the right making it difficult to pass. What would you do differently?: Drink more! I had my aero-bottle with gatoraid but it was so warm I couldn't bear to drink it. Plus gatoraid tastes too salty after an ocean swim. Next time I will have water instead. I ended up starting the run already dehydrated. Transition 2
Comments: I took a few gulps from my water bottle. I am a slow transitioner. What would you do differently?: speed laces Run
Comments: "this totally sucks" "I need to do more bricks" and "its freakin' hot" were the only thoughts in my head for the first mile. I was doing a walk/run and noticed that someone was doing the same thing. She would pass me then I would pass her. We ended up talking. Her name was Stephanie from Hartford CT. It was her first tri ever and she was having a bad run as was I. So we stayed together till she got a burst of energy at the last 1/4 mile. She found me later and told me she would never forget me for getting her through the run. I didn't really...but it was pretty cool. What would you do differently?: more bricks no more hip injuries Post race
Warm down: I had a banana and water. I needed to head out because it was my father's 86th birthday. I packed up my stuff and headed back to the Music circus parking lot. I just followed everyone else as I didn't know the way. We were all joking that this was the 4th event in the tri....riding with a huge backpack. I also just had my runnning shoes on. I felt like I might tip over at first but then I got used to it. What limited your ability to perform faster: I haven't been running enough due to injury. Event comments: This was a really well organized race considering it was the first one. The course was extremely beautiful. I really hope they are able to do this tri again. I stopped for iced coffee (since it was already hot at 5:30am) and a bagel with peanut butter.
Went to the race site and put my backpack and bike in transition then drove to the Music Circus parking lot 1.7 miles away (got lost) and took the shuttle bus back to the site.
Ate my bagel drank some gatoraid and took enduralytes since it was so hot.
I did a nice warmup swim...the water felt really cold at first but I got used to it.
