Pre-race routine:

Up at 5 to drive the 1/2 hr or so to the site..had a few bites of blueberries & yogurt w/ crunchies on top..cup o hazlenut & joss tunes..soaking up the green..the mountains ..the clear lake & woods..had rained day before- a sparkly clean early summer morning-!
Event warmup:

just jogging to & from the transition area, rode the bike a minute or so to be sure brakes & gears ok..then just wandered about checking things out...
Swim
  • 18m
  • 600 yards
  • 03m / 100 yards
Comments:

buoys visible-straight course, plenty of room at start..well monitored, carpeted exit ..my chip strap was coming loose..had to stop & stuff into wetsuit leg more than once- and I do not need any delays with my turtle swimming!
What would you do differently?:

actually be a swimmer
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

included in bike times
What would you do differently?:

bring a bucket to sit on for removing wetsuit & skip sox..take a gel

Comments:

enjoyed this ride..my swim wave was last so I got to pass people- the drafting rules were strictly enforced -it was fun to be sure was really up to passing ..( especially those 2 guys with the fancy tri bikes heehee)
What would you do differently?:

maybe push a bit more
Transition 2

Run

  • 3.2 miles
  • 08m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

nice run- variety, seeing other racers both bike 7 run, a drummer at the entry into woods- it was FUN!
What would you do differently?:

run here every day!
Post race
Warm down:

felt like could keeo going- just walked back out to course to cheer in some people..did a little stretching 7 eventually a massage (heavenly!)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

just taking it easy- don't want any exacerbation of injury if going to try to survive a 1/2 in 3 wks with insufficient training!

Event comments:

I had a great time at this race..this was a first time event at a wonderful venue with USAT officials there, excellent race directors, scenic & safe course well thought out. Chip timing, finish line photographer, an expo, aid station, live music & BBQ, massage- all the perks on an "intimate" scale..and the resort is a family run & family/group friendly place in an idyllic setting.I stuck around for the kids race which was great fun to watch..& took home a live pine tree as my age group prize-now that's unique!!! Fabulous first timer or early season sprint-a Bt takeover would be BLAST..Would definitely do this race again and recommend it to others.
And yes, gave me a great excuse for a solo Happy Dance !!

Course: first 1/2 mile was a "slow zone" single file which at first seemed bad but actually i think was pretty cool..narrow strip of road well marked & monitored..so as you came out of t1 you had a chance to take a drink, get situated & not lose your "position', then could open up & pass etc.. first 3-4 miles were hilly & a bit rough but well marked, mid section smooth & flat, & returned same as start..woodsy, minimal traffic, some good hills..
