Age Group Rank = 2/2
Pre-race routine:

Ate oatmeal & bread with pb about 2.5 hours before race, drank ~10-15 oz water until about 7:30, then drank infinit (~10 oz).
Event warmup:

No warm-up, I was pretty nervous, so was just wandering around talking to folks on the beach
Swim
  • 32m 10s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim surprised me-I didn't do as well as I thought I might. I was in the last wave to go off, so I was standing around until 8:30. And it was a big wave-all the international distance women, and the 50+ men. Made for a crowded swim. Not terrible, but probably the most crowded swim that I've had. I didn't get a good start, ended up being kind of pushed toward the back. And I had alot of trouble getting around people, and there was alot of bumping and elbowing, that sort of thing. I felt like I was fighting with/around folks for most of the race.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe the solution is a faster start to get ahead of folks, and then settle into a groove? Start in front. Be consistent about swim training. Uh...once a week isn't going to cut it.

Comments:

I think this was okay. Not sure that I'd change anything.
Bike
  • 1h 24m 50s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 17.58 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt pretty good, I was pushing hard initially, because I was hoping to keep in front of the other person in my age group. She passed me around mile 7-8, I would say. After that, I just kept trying to keep a good cadence and be consistent and focused. I usually fall off my cadence and pace because my mind can wander :) We hit a windy portion of the course (it was an out and back section) towards the end, and I was starting to feel fatigued here.
I was pretty happy to see that I'd averaged 17.5. I didn't expect that at all-I really didn't look at my speed, just focusing on cadence. This would come back to bite me later, but hey, I'll take it!
I tried to alternate water and infinit every 10 minutes or so, but by the end I started to feel hot and thirsty so I was just drinking whenever I could. I drank almost my entire bottle of water (20 or 24 oz) and around 3/4's of my bottle of infinit. I had a gel about 50 mins in.

What would you do differently?:

In training, try two gels with the infinit? It's just hard to get all the calories I need from drinking just infinit-and I get a full stomach. Play with bike nutrition a bit.
Transition 2
  • 02m 8s
Comments:

I was slow to get my shoes on-I should maybe try lace locks or something. It seems to take forever to put shoes and socks on. Plus I had more gear to pick up (water bottle, visor, race belt).
What would you do differently?:

lace locks?
Run
  • 1h 15m 44s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 12m 12s  min/mile
Comments:

This was tough. I think I was doing okay for most of the first loop, trying to tell myself not to walk. My legs seemed to feel heavier and more sore as I ran (a sign of not enough bricks?) Took infinit and water at every aid station. Drank infinit and dumped water on my head. Carried water bottle along, did drink out of that, but tried not to gulp it (even though I wanted too, esp. at the end). Mainly took small drinks to wet my mouth and to wash the gel down I took at about 30 minutes in. I had no problems with cramps (except right as I got off the bike), or sloshing stomach, but especially toward the end, I felt like I had a really full stomach--I think I was drinking too much. I felt so thirsty though. At one point I just wanted to stop in the shade and drink the whole 8 oz cup of infinit that they gave me. I did walk through most aid stations and ended up walking some of the second loop.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe not pour so much water on me-by the end I had wet, squishy shoes. Practice drinking so much on the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank water, walked around a bit-but they had started to take down parts of TA, even though there were still folks on the course so I wanted to get my bike and stuff out. Probably should have stretched and walked around more, cause I felt like poop on the ride home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat. Lack of brick training. Too hard on the bike.

Event comments:

I can't really comment on the after stuff. I didn't really feel like eating and there was a line for massages, so we didn't stick around too long after I finished.

I'm pretty familiar with the roads-one nasty hill up from the river (however, there is a sweet downhill to get down to the river), one moderate hill, but the rest are really just what I would describe as rollers. Several long flat stretches, where I wished several times that I had aerobars.
