Pre-race routine:

Loaded up the car the night before and my son had a friend over for a sleep over, so not the best nights sleep but still went down around 11:15. Woke up at 5:15 got dressed in my Team Javelin Uni and sweat top. Grabbed an apple and a power bar for the road and headed out. Got to the race at about 7:00 after gassing up, visted the bathroom, checked in, got marked, brought my bike in, set up transition, visted the bathroom again, listened to the pre race meeting and found they had added 3 miles to the bike course from 12 to 15 miles. That was ok since the bike was the focus for today. Swam in my Tri suit since 1/4 mile isn't enough to justify the wetsuit dance for me.
Event warmup:

Waded out into the water. Don't really know why I didn't warm up, should have at least leak check the goggles.

Comments:

Got going and had a rotten start. My goggle leaked and I had to dump the water out and seal them, then I got beaten up, swam over, kicked, pulled. I can handle that part, but I started to feel constricted in my chest and very uncomfortable. Also since it was clockwise I drifted to the inside into more traffic instead of away as I normally do. Had to calm my self down and looked up and I was right on the turn buoy. From there I got a nice rhythm and relaxed. I passed a few folks and navigated off them look up every once in a while to see I was dead on, another tight turn and headed in. Very good second half after a rotten start. Would be the theme for the entire day.
What would you do differently?:

Warm up, test my goggles, seed to the outside not the inside, and get the feel of the water before its time to go.
Transition 1
  • 01m 55s
Comments:

T1 is so much faster without the wetsuit. Slow and efficeient transition, just had some issues getting clipped in to the peddles. 70/233 overall
What would you do differently?:

Pretty good.

Comments:

Another poor start. Trouble clipping in, minor collision with #143(no harm). Finally got going and the wet ri suit was it very cold with the wiind. Don't know if it was the wind or what but I couldn't average more than 19 MPH dipping to the 18 and 17 range over the first 3 miles. I had been going back and forth with #143 for most of this time and this helped my get into a good candence and rhythm and the pace got back to the 19s and 20s. I would pass #143 on the uphills and he would come back on the flats. At about the 7 mile mark we turned back towards the start and I started to really get going, #143 had pulled away but I cranked it up on a slight downhill got up to 23-24 MPH I reeled him back in a cranked on past him and kept him behind me the rest of the ride. At that point I kept hammering it averaging 22 mph reaching a max of 26 and even uphill I was keeping 20. I passed a number of folks. Of of the things I enjoy about tri are how friendly folks are. Several folks encouraging me as I motored by, so cool. I struggled a bit at the very end drifiting down to 18 mph and the last intersection was pretty trechorious and i had to slow way down. Cranked back up to 21 mph to the end and unclipped a bit early. Odometer said 15.15. Officially I missed 20mph by 10 seconds but since everyone I talked to measured it at 15.1-15.4 I'll call it 15.1 and I'm in there.
What would you do differently?:

Hit it harder early, got into a great zone and once I was there the wind and hills didn't matter much. Still 2nd 20 mph bike leg felt good.
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

They didn't time T2 for some reason. T2 was added to the run time since no run out timing mat I was the first one back to my rack so that was easy, got the bike shoes off got the running shoes on and got my butt royally kicked by my shoelaces. Took three tries on the right shoe and I was sort of flushed and missing once on the left. I left the hat behind since the course in almost completely shaded. I would estimate 90 seconds
What would you do differently?:

Stay calm and maybe get so yanks.

Comments:

Got going OK and then saw my buddy #143 shoot past me. Took a while for my legs to come in and my right calf bothered my early, but it came to me once we reached the jeep trail and I started to push the pace. I looked forward to #143 and he became my target. Ran into one of the cool people from the bike who asked me what had taken me so long. We had a short conversation about my issues in T2 and socks, he picked up his pace to match mine but I had to go some I pushed on by. hit the turn and realised that not too many folks had passed my going the other direction, so i must have been doiing pretty good. Push the pace the way back and slowly was reeling in #143 but I ran out of time and the tril back around to the finsih was pretty uneven and didn't feel comfortable really pushing it there. Good run saw 1:19:56 on the clock but chip said 1:20:00. Good run.
What would you do differently?:

Push the end, I let the path give me an excuse but I did almost tweak my ankle at the worse part so I did have something to base my fears on.
Post race
Warm down:

On of the best things about this race is that the Park has a changing room and showers, so I took a shower (very cold water) since I remembered so soap, and got changed. Drank my gatorade then Saw Rhonda finish the bike and cheered her on. Went and got some bread, lemonade, and fruit. Then took the bike back to the car. Brought my other bottle of Gatorade and waited for Rhonda and the 11 year old kid and his dad finish. Stayed for part of the awards and looked at the preliminary result and saw I was top 10 in my AG.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Well a C race, 2 weeks since Eagleman, an unexpecteed course change, issues with tying my shoes, and being stupid and not warming up. But having said that, a great bike a good job of not letting problems derail me and alway regaining my focus and concentration. A very good race overall very consistant overal ranks across the board (I think the run would have been much better if my rotten T2 didn't drag it down). Still don't quite understand how I went 70,70,68 and 68 in each leg but ended up 59th overall. That was a first. Very happy with the effort. And reached my short term goal top 10 in my AG! I can say that even when you add the 2nd place OA guy and the two fastest Clydesdales. 7th without them 10th with them. Top 10 either way. Woo Hoo!

Event comments:

2nd year I did this race. Don't know why they did the course change but it worked out ok. Fun race, very relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. Enjoyed myself on the course, had fun. A good mix for good competition (Some the regions top AGers) and alot of newbies. Fun race, no thrills, but great location and vibe to it. DQ does a really nice job.
