Buffalo Springs Lake Ironman 70.3
72F / 22C
Overcast
Total Time = 5h 32m 20s
Overall Rank = 268/900
Age Group = 55-59
Age Group Rank = 7/22
Pre-race routine:

got up @4:am > eat 2 bananas-started injesting fluids/gatorade, water- no coffee
Event warmup:

got in the water an did a stroke check > did a few sprints > went out to the first turn to site the first buoy turn
Swim
  • 37m 19s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

this was a really great swim > I believe that I was the only one in my AG that did not suit up > positioned myself to avoid a lot of traffic > the first turn is within 60 ft of the start line > navigated around a lot of bodies to get my position set to have a straight run to the turn buoy > picked up speed and maintained my pace throughout the entire swim > breathing was controlled as well as the pace > kept my legs to a minimum kick to save oxygen/energy
What would you do differently?:

nothing > great swim for me
Transition 1
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

this was a great transition > was the fastest T/time in AG > I didn't have to strip off a suit > had everything layed out in correct order to eliminate the fumbling around factor
What would you do differently?:

nothing > went as I envisioned it
Bike
  • 2h 50m 15s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.74 mile/hr
Comments:

I did as well as I had predicted I would > was under my "perspctive time" > I was somewhat suprised > I did not "crank out" this ride > rode strong and steady and took in my nutrition plan as I had layed out > was very pleased
What would you do differently?:

nothing > I stayed on my plan an it worked for me
Transition 2
  • 02m 31s
Comments:

I was not as fast as I should have been > seemed to have issues w/the socks > sorta stuck on my feet keeping me a little off balance > fuel belt was a little cumbersome putting on
What would you do differently?:

I'm getting me a different belt > will use a different pair/type of sock
Run
  • 2h 00m 32s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 12s  min/mile
Comments:

I went out very easy to keep the HR in check > fast walked the climbs to keep the HR in check > I was a little disappointed in the run > I was doing some "real running" in segments to bring my overall pace down but it didn't help > I was hoping to take at least 5min off of this overall run finish time
What would you do differently?:

train the run harder
Post race
Warm down:

walked around and stretched > drank water/gatorade > stretched some more

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm not sure > more than likely the training aspect

Event comments:

This is an IM Qualifier that draws a lot of top pros: Chris Leigh, Tim DeBoom, Natasha Baddmann, etc
