Swim
What would you do differently?: Use full suit in cold water. By 2nd lap I was in late stage 1 hypothermia Transition 1
Comments: Was in stage 2 hypotheria at this point, was not even sure where I was. Jumped in hot tub for a few minutes. Struggled to put on bike gear I was shivering so much. Really paid the price for not wearing full suit. Started to lose vision in right eye. What would you do differently?: wear full suit in cold water! Bike
Comments: Took about 40min of riding before I warmed up(had arm and leg warmers). At this point had lost total vision in right eye and had no idea why. Rode very conservative and only avg'd 120 watts for ride. Could not stay down in the aero position. My neck was killing me from the swim(trying to look up over the chop). Was a little leary of hammering because of the lost vision. What would you do differently?: Probably nothing considering the conditions. Transition 2
Comments: Had medical check my eye so this took a few minutes. The paramedic had n idea what was wrong. What would you do differently?: nothing Run
Comments: 1st 14 was not to bad. Last 12 I ran/walked. Pretty much just lost motivation at this point. Was very concerned about lost of vision and just hurt everywhere. Met some nice people the last 12 miles who had overcome some big obstacles to race. What would you do differently?: Will try some advil on a long run to see if this will affect jt pain, if it does I might try this in race. Fuel and hydration was good and was not really that tired Post race
Warm down: Post race went to the medical people and 2 ER M.D.'s checked my eye and felt that my cornea was swollen. Both said they had never seen this before today, but that had seen 3 of these today. Vision returned to normal 2 days after the race :) What limited your ability to perform faster: Was freaked about the vision problem and mentally broke on the run. Considering all it was ok. The things I need to fix should not be that hard and hopefully I can put it all togther next race. Event comments: Nice place to race, but come prepared for some cold water, it about finished my day. Nothing special, arrived 2 days pre race and swam part of course. Water as much colder than I expected and had to buy neoprene cap to keep head warm. My sleevless wetsuit was not the bset option, but the only one I had. Drove bike course with Jeff and his family on friday.
