Pre-race routine:

went to sleep by 7:30 pm the night before. woke up 4AM. Got dressed. Packed. Ate a bagel and peanut butter. Drank some Cytomax. Got to transition area at 4:45am. Set everything up by 5am.

Event warmup:

Went for short 2 mile bike warmup. Went for a 1 mile warmup run on beach.
6:50 am got wetsuit on and walked down to water's edge. spent about 15 minutes doing swim warmup until 7:15 meeting.
Swim
  • 11m 34s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 38s / 100 yards
Comments:

Never established a good ryhthm with regard to breathing or stroke. Went in figuring I could do it in about 9 minutes - didn't happen. It seemed as if we were swimming against the undercurrent most of the way.
What would you do differently?:

Not line up dead center and try to stay with the front of the pack. It would have allowed me to be more efficient with my pace and stroke. I literally felt like I was going to pass out on the run to T1. Stopped to walk some.
Transition 1
  • 01m 25s
Comments:

Still taking too long to get up to pedaling speed while getting feet strapped in.
What would you do differently?:

Practice transition into clipped in shoes.
Bike
  • 40m 18s
  • 12 miles
  • 17.87 mile/hr
Comments:

This is where I am really disappointed. Why 17.9 mph? I've done a couple of races between 19-21 mph. Today I just couldn't push it. Maybe it was the swim. Just couldn't recover in time. I'm gonna have to get out on some hill rides.
Transition 2
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

Pretty happy with time. No problems. Time could have been better or worse depending on locations of rack.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 31m 45s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

What can I say? I'm just slow. As slow as this was, I'm not too disappointed. Last year in August I did the Wildwood Tri/Du and it took me almost 45 minutes (i walked nearly the entire first 1.5 miles). Yesterday I didn't stop at all. On asphalt I'm doing this distance in about 26:30.
What would you do differently?:

Continue to improve fitness and running pace.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Can't tell. Might have been starting with the swim. Bust my butt to get out there and felt exhausted after completing it and then having to run 1/4 - 1/2 mile to transition and getting onto bike with headwinds.

Event comments:

Will try to do again next year.
