Total Time = 1h 23m 34s
Overall Rank = 47/291
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 6/27
Pre-race routine:

Got up about 4 AM and loaded the truck with mom23's and my "stuff" She made peanut butter bagels and we stopped at the quickie mart for coffee. Drove over to Lake Ray Roberts on some of RGill's secret backroads (heard banjos ala Deliverance only once). Good parking spot.
Event warmup:

Mill about chatting with various BTers, a little walking around, and some standing in line for port-a-potties. Otherwise nothing.
Run
  • 06m 55s
  • 1 miles
  • 06m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

Didn't really feel a good frame of reference for this run. Probably could have gone faster. Some of the earlier waves were on their way back so it was hard to judge speed/distance. Probably should have treated it for what it was - 1 mile.
What would you do differently?:

Probably could have pushed it a little more since it was only 1 mile. Had plenty in the tank.
Transition 1
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

I was 17/27 in my AG for this transition. But hey, I cut my transition by a minute and 2 seconds from my first duathlon
What would you do differently?:

Run in the transistion area faster, get my crap on quicker.
Bike
  • 51m 27s
  • 17.6 miles
  • 20.52 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt really good on the bike. slipped into a good low 20's pace. Even so, JCBolton came flying past me a few miles before the turnaround. After making the turnaround, I started looking for mom23 and sportysue (who were 2 waves back) to see if I was about to get smoked. I must have been looking to hard for them because I went right by JCBolton who had flatted out without even noticing (Sorry Clint!). Eventually saw mom23 and thought, "damn, she's going to catch me". That made me ride harder. Stayed in the drops quite a bit to get more aero and played pass-and-be-passed most of the back 9. Had problems dropping into my middle chainring on a few of the climbs, so I had to gut it out - nothing too bad. My front derailleur and I have yet to come to a peace accord. Turned back into the park and the route became mysteriously empty. Honestly, I thought I had taken a wrong turn for a while. The seed of doubt probably cost me a milli-second or two.
What would you do differently?:

Get the damn front derailleur fixed. Clip on some aero bars, drink more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 23s
Comments:

20/27 in AG. Again, I cut my transition down 1 minute and 1 second from my first duathlon! WooHoo. For some reason, bending over to lace up the shoes seemed hard so I wound up sitting down. Mom23 got me some of those little lace lock things, so it was quicker getting the shoes on. Then I realized, damn it feels good to sit, and I wasn't sure I wanted to get up. Managed to do so though. As I rounded the bike rack, I realized I still had a Clif bar in my jersey pocket so I stopped and tossed it back to my transition spot. Legs were barely moving and I asked the lady at the initial waterstop to point a finger at me to see if I was actually moving.
What would you do differently?:

Practice running with the bike and getting the running shoes on quicker. Don't pack along unnecessary crap. More bike-to-run bricks.
Run
  • 22m 49s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

Other than the shade for a good portion of the run, I did not like this course. There was a confluence of runners from 3 directions near mile 1 where they had set up a water station. This made for some interesting hydration attempts. After making the turnaround near the halfway point, I had to walk briefly because I thought I was getting lightheaded. Turned out it was just the sunlight dancing through the trees playing tricks with my eyes. Once I got refocused and told myself not to focus on the light changes, I was fine. Saw Mom23 & SportySue sprinting their ways to AG placement. Left/Right protocals were not always obeyed on the sidewalk, so the last 1/2 mile or so I had to do a few bobs-and-weaves. Sprinted home feeling pretty good.
What would you do differently?:

Ran fine, took plenty of water. Don't focus on the light changes.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and finally remembered to stop my HRM. Drank lots of water and accelerade (yuck). Ate some pizza. Ran into JCAgg & his "date". Watched Mom23 finish and then Sporty Sue. Gathered with the Gills and cooled down. Hung around for Mom23 & SportySue to collect their Disco AG awards (LPs). Mom & I then headed home but got sidetracked at RBM and dropped another pile of $ on new tires for Mom.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Inexperience and really slow transitions. Big road bike with my lanky body acting like a big sail. Lack of training. Regular, cheap bicycle shorts with a chamois that collected all the water I poured on my head (think waterlogged maxipad). Otherwise, felt surprisingly good afterwards.

Event comments:

I thought it was good considering what all Dallas Athletes had to change up because of the weather. Kuddos to Dallas Athletes. If I could swim, I'd probably plan to do this next year. They did need more porta-potties, but I think this resulted from the park facilities being closed due to flooding. Also, I'm not sure if there was some "special" arregano on the post-race pizza I ate, but the rest of the day I spent eating; for some reason I was constantly starved.
