Total Time = 1h 44m 18s
Overall Rank = 302/
Age Group = 34-39
Age Group Rank = 13/16
Pre-race routine:

PB on bagel with banana 6am
Gatorade on the drive to the race
Sport Beans 45 minutes before start (I would have taken these later had I realized my wave wouldn't start for 45 minutes. I thought I was eating them 20 minutes before the start)
Event warmup:

Splash in the water about 2 minutes before the swim start. A little bit of yoga stretching on the beach.
Swim
  • 12m 31s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 17s / 100 yards
Comments:

I never was able to get out of the herd of people. It was arms and legs everywhere except for maybe the last 50 yards of the swim. The rounding buoy had a permanent white buoy right behind it so when I cut the turn kind of closely I hit the darned thing. What a dork.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to sprint out to get out of the herd.
Transition 1
  • 01m 55s
Comments:

Missed the left clip the first try, but was still able to keep going without falling over. Bike was in a good gear for the start.
Bike
  • 51m 24s
  • 14 miles
  • 16.34 mile/hr
Comments:

Absolutely enormous hill right at the beginning (mile 3 or so) but I was ready for it. I made it up without dismounting while a lot of people around me were walking their bikes. That felt pretty good mentally. Rolling hills the rest of the way. A few flats. It was very hot and there were some hot, gusty crosswinds. A year ago this course would have killed me. One GU at about mile 11.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder on all the hills. Give it everything I've got.
Transition 2
  • 01m 55s
Comments:

Chose not to wear socks on run.
Run
  • 36m 35s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 11m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

The decision to run without socks was a bad one. I got a huge blister on my left instep. I usually don't have a problem with runs this short if I don't wear socks, but I'd rather not risk this in the future. There was a water stop right out of transition, but the next one wasn't until mile 1.5. They needed a stop at the top of the killer hill at mile 1.
What would you do differently?:

Wear socks. I'm not that fast in transition that 10 seconds in sock time will make a difference. ALWAYS carry my own water on the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Flopped in the lake to cool off. Drank a 20 oz bottle of water in about 10 seconds.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat, lack of water on the run, no socks on the run

Event comments:

I'd consider doing this race again, but I'll plan on training in 96 degree heat on the biggest hills I can find.
