Swim
Comments: swim + run up to T1. being the 3rd wave the water was stirred up a bit. I guess if I noticed that I wasn't concentrating on my stroke all the time. What would you do differently?: not much. Transition 1
Comments: Champion chip on ankle does not help getting the wetsuit off. Quite a long run to the bikes. Had racked in a good spot and put big yellow towel on the ground to help me spot. I felt like I was pretty smooth - 1:56 seems like a long time but I ranked 15th overall for that so I guess that was actually OK. (Fastest T1 was 1:05 (man). Only the women's winner was faster than me amongst the women so pretty happy with that. What would you do differently?: Not much. Run faster up the beach? (LOL always seems so easy to say that sitting at home!) Bike
Comments: Was really looking forward to doing this bike course again after the June 3 race which was my first tri in ~ 15 yrs so was really keen to see how much faster I had got in 2 mths. There was a headwind staright away - bit depressing but rode in the drops (still don't have tri bars) and tried to stay low and work. Caught people here and there and felt like I was working and definitely felt more power and actively riding than the race #1. Took a Hammer gel before the downhill. Hammered (tried to anyway!) the downhill (which in hindsight might not be such a great idea - maybe better to go average here and save legs for the climb?) Large group of people strung out ahead of me on the climb - slowly passed many of them including one gal who immediately got on my wheel - the shadow of her helmet was up by my foot so I yelled "Hey, no drafting". She yelled that she "wasn't" er, yeah, ya were. She passed me back on the next flat in her tri bars (grrr, very annoying, a guy passed me too). Just kept working - there was a pesky 3/4 front crosswind at this point. Unstrapped shoes after the entrance to the park and worked hard all the way to the mat - passed the guy and maybe the gal (can't remember) on the approach to T2. What would you do differently?: Add tri bars. Was a bit bummed after the race as this ride was ~ :30 slower than June 3rd even though I felt like I was so much stronger. So on the numbers it was a bummer, however when I got home I looked at the bike times of other people in the field who had also done race #1 and with their run and T times the same all the bike legs were 2-3 minutes slower so I guess mine was actually quite good. 6th amongst the women. Fastest woman was 53:53, fastest man 43:53. Transition 2
Comments: My bike was just inside the T2 entrance - must remember this as didn't have far to run in cleats - got to run most of the TA after racking in running shoes - small detail but reduces chances of sliding all over the place. Plenty of space on the racks so easy to rack bike. TA time was 17th overall so another good one. time was 3rd amongst the women (fastest was the winner in :40) What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: Was looking forward to this - it's amazing what training and course knowledge will do to you. I have done the offroad weekly series all summer which also has a hard trail run so psychologically this one was "easy". Also there were people and women ahead of me so good "carrots". The out-and-back style is great as you get to see the winners coming flying back in their return leg. Hard work but rewarding and enjoyable - love the trails in my trails shoes. Took over a minute off my race #1 time. What would you do differently?: Not much. Split times seem a bit strange as middle mile was fastest and last downhill mile was slower than that - maybe I was knackered. passed a gal in the last mile and was conscious of having to work to stay ahead of her. Post race
Warm down: even though absolutely shagged at the finish, I walked and then had a light jog which kind of surprised me - I guess my fitness is coming. walked back to TA, packed up gear and then went for an easy mile or so bike back down the entrance road. people were still coming in off the bike - I have to say I was very impressed by them - many on mtbs (what a hard days work that is) but all just moving along still doing their race. What limited your ability to perform faster: specific and regular training. I think run fitness is good, could use some regualr swim training and intervals and more riding on the bike. work and kitchen remodel just hasn't allowed much but the Tuesday night race series has worked wonders. Event comments: Well organized, comprehensively-timed local race. Fantastically scenic course in state park. This course would be rated hilly so it's not a good one for a first-timer who isn't mentally prepared for the hills and run is on trails, which I love but I know is not everyone's cup-of-tea. Happy with my T times - more work to do elsewhere. Last updated: 2007-07-11 12:00 AM

Up at 4:45 am (man have I been spoilt by all the evening racing I have been doing - last morning race was this race back on June 3).Coffee, toast. Left at 5:30 for the 1hr drive.
Jogged a little and found a nice sheltered sunny spot and stretched. Wetsuit on at 7:45am. No one was doing swim warmups and it was 8am (race was meant to start at 8am). There was a lifeguard down at the beach so I asked if I could go in and that set the lemmings off. Got spooked about 50 yds out by a band of wispy weed - my reaction was to swim with my head up which I know is not very fast. So swam back and forth a bit through it - when the race came the other waves had obliterated the weed. Water was a good temp but you felt the cooler air temp as soon as you got out. Stretched again. Women were in the 3rd wave and it was exciting that there was a good number of us (60?)
