Pre-race routine:

Had two hour drive, so I left at 4:00 AM and drove to the site. Had a gatorade, some mini-muffins and a banana pre-race. Then drank a pre-workout energy drink about 30 minutes before the race began.
Event warmup:

Just some stretching and walking around getting set up.
Swim
  • 16m 50s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

I held my own with the pack and felt good about the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, really. Maybe go out a little more relaxed and keep my pace a little better. I think I started a little too fast, but worked my way into a nice pace and had a good swim. In the top 1/3 of all swimmers.
Transition 1
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

Had a little trouble locking into my pedals, but other than that, I thought I had an OK transition.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, just go faster...
Bike
  • 1h 04m 3s
  • 15.53 miles
  • 14.55 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt a lot better in this race that in Athens (my first). But, I need to hammer it out more and go faster. I had a comfortable ride...too comfortable, I guess, because I was s-l-o-w. I need to somehow work on getting my pace faster. Going the distance is not a problem any more, I need to work on getting faster now. Way too slow for this caliber of race and athletes.
What would you do differently?:

Go out faster and hammer away at it. I had never ridden the course before (and didn't even drive it) before the race, so I had no idea what to expect. I guess since I heard the horror stories of the "dam hill" at the end, I was holding back to conserve energy for the hill. After the fact, I should have hammered all along and the hill would have been OK. It wasn't nearly as bad as I expected. My "engine" is still carrying way too much weight to be very fast on the bike or run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

Good transition. Ready to go and no major flaws.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, I had a good transition.
Run
  • 37m 38s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 12m 06s  min/mile
Comments:

My nemesis continues to get the best of me in this sport. I did run more relaxed than at Athens, and didn't struggle as much, especially at the end. In fact, I felt stronger at the end whereas in Athens I was dead. I did the Galloway approach of run/walk, with a specified time for both. Started out with 3 run, 2 walk, and ended up with 4 and 1. Final 1/2 mile or so nonstop.
What would you do differently?:

Just lose weight and run more. Overall I was happy with the way I ended the run. I am just too slow and need to log more, faster, miles.
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing special, just relax and cool down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I felt good about my swim, especially since it was my first OWS. In the bike, I just didn't hammer as hard as I should have (and could have). The run was much better than my last one, but still very slow. All in all, I just need to push harder on the bike and not leave anything on the course.

Event comments:

Great race venue, nice OWS, beautiful bike course, and nice park run. Lots of volunteers who did a great job, well organized, etc. Definitely a good race. I will say that there did not appear to be as many beginners at this race as there were in Athens, thus my finish was comparatively poor, but I actually thought I performed better than in Athens. I could tell a big difference in my run as I felt much better than in March. I was not faster, but I had a more relaxed and less taxing run than before. So, I did notice some improvement even though the time does not show it.

Age Group: 9/21
Overall: 73/200
Performance: Good
Suit: tri shorts
Course: This was my first open water swim and was longer than my first tri in Athens. I was in the second wave (age 39+ males) I thought it went well. Got kicked a little (and kicked some people, too) I was able to hold my own with the group, passed a few people and even passed a couple of people from the first wave. All in all, I was happy with my swim.

Course: Very pretty course, with rolling hills. Nothing real bad except the last steep hill up the dam. But, it wasn't very long, so it really wasn't that bad of a climb. I really expected a lot worse, reading some of the race reports from others.
