Overall Rank = 371/1091
Age Group = Men 25-29
Age Group Rank = 45/102
Pre-race routine:

Got up about 4:45. Tough time sleeping, got about 5 hours in. Had plain toast with some cottage cheese and vitamin water. Downed a cup of coffee on way to race. Had everything ready to go from night before.
Event warmup:

Got about 100M in about 10 min prior to start. Calmed me down a bit. Water felt great and stroke felt perfect. Will definitely do that again. Didn't do much for leg stretches, that was foolish. Had a powerbar about 20 min prior to start. I was pretty anxious being this was my first race. Getting into water before start was key.
Swim
  • 31m 27s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 06s / 100 meters
Comments:

Ran into a ton of legs and bodies along the way. It was a pretty much a zig-zag route. I would estimate I did more like 1800M. Started out drafting then I went to the outside after the first buoy and really turned it on. Last leg was my strongest. I passed a ton of people. Overall it was about the chaos I was expecting. Finished strong, maybe too strong. Both calf's cramped on lake exit and didn't stop until bike.
What would you do differently?:

I could have swam a little harder and been o.k. Sighting was better than practice but needs to get better. Could have shaved 4-5 min off by just swimming straight. Legs needed better stretching prior to start. Last leg was chaos. Caught up some of the slower folks from the earlier starts. Lots of bumping and its was tough to stay in grove.
Transition 1
  • 03m 13s
Comments:

Forgot to set our socks. Shuffled around bag to find them. Probably lost about 30 on that move.
What would you do differently?:

Set out a towel. Remember socks.
Bike
  • 1h 19m 2s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.86 mile/hr
Comments:

Legs were toast from the start. Didn't feel like I had any power. Starting into headwind didn't help. Enjoyed not having to stop for people or traffic. Volunteers were awesome. Second half of bike felt fresher and faster. Finishing with tailwind was sweet.
What would you do differently?:

Get rid of pos road bike. Practice more swim to bike bricks. Trained the least and it showed. Get stronger.
Transition 2
  • 02m 19s
Comments:

This one went Perfect.
What would you do differently?:

Tieless laces.
Run
  • 50m 7s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt good in start. Didn't overdoo it. Not used to getting water ever mile, that was clutch. Dropped gel about 15 min into run.. good timing. Got to about 4 mile mark and realized I had plenty left in tank to finish strong. Turned it up, last mile was around 7 min/mile pace. 3/4 sprint for last half mile and full sprint for the last quarter to the finish line. Thank you adrenaline. Thoroughly pleased with sprint pace on the finish.
What would you do differently?:

More base training to get HR down, more intevals for speed.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretch

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Better pre-stretching, Lack of interval training. Leg strength on bike. Quality of bike. Sighting and efficiency in swim. More sport specific strength training in off-season

Event comments:

Extremely pleased with first race. Last half-mile on run was priceless. Training volume was right on. I'm going to slaughter this time next year.

Performance: Good

Course: Water was perfect. Not much for waves, Trying to sight into the sun was a challenge. Good thing they had volunteers on edges of course. Being I always breath on left made sighting challenging. Not sure if it was better to be on outside because of lack of people or if If would have been better to hug the buoys. Time could have been better if I swam in a better line.
