Swim
Comments: I think I hit the turn somewhere around 5 minutes - not doing too bad, then turned the corner and felt like someone had put cement into my feet and arms. Had a few times of being hit and kicked, but just mentally lost it. Ended up flipping over several times to try to regain composure, but I had it in my head already before the start that I was going to do poorly (i.e.: 'only did 500 consecutively 1 time before race', 'don't have wetsuit to keep me floating', etc...) What would you do differently?: EVERYTHING!!!!!! Yes, group, you may now throw all comments toward me about getting my butt into the pool and building endurance and stop whining about it!! Overall swim put as 'bad' because there was nothing below that.. Transition 1
Comments: still a little off-kilter after the swim. Got better socks since Elkhart Lake Triathlon, so at least it was less than 3 minutes (which is good). Had to stop with bike on the way out to pick up the extra water bottle that I was hoping to put on the bike before Sandi started her race, but transition area was closed. What would you do differently?: just go faster - I think my mind was shot with the whole swim performance thing, so I figure that's why the slow transition. Bike
Comments: Took about 4 miles to get into rhythm of the bike. When that finally happened, and I started to get more into groove, I guess it went o.k. Got to pass an expensive bike on an uphill, which was fun, 'cause he was going really slow, and (thanks to Team TurboDonkey for help with knowing how to shift on hills) I was still going pretty fast. Saw Sandi coming out on the bike as I was coming back in, so I knew she was doing o.k. (first thing I had thought when her wave went off and I didn't see her was that she was looking for me, and that she was going to be REALLY pissed that she missed her race start). This also assured her that I hadn't drown in the lake, which was nice for her end. Also helped my mind a little more. Realized (about 4 miles in), that I had forgotten my cycling gloves, AND my cycling computer, so that kind of sucked. It would have been nice to have that to push myself a litte more to try to average 20 - maybe next time (wait, that will be Devil's Challenge - never mind) What would you do differently?: Have a better mindset from the start, not forget gloves/computer. Go faster. Transition 2
Comments: Someone had taken my spot with their bike, so had to move that a little. O.K. getting shoes on, (still don't have the speed laces on yet - they were in the tri-bag.... don't ask). realized after I started the run (by about 1 minute) that I had forgotten my race belt and number. Had to go back, lost exactly 2 minutes with that little mix-up. What would you do differently?: uuuhhhhhhh....... remember my race belt the first time??? Run
Comments: The extra 2 minutes from missing race belt was in this section. So otherwise I felt like I was doing o.k., a little slower than normal, but, hey, at that point, the swim was done, and nothing too bad could happen any more, could it?? Talked to a couple different people on the run, and had a little gas for the last mile, so picked it up some for the final stretch. What would you do differently?: See above.... remember the race belt the first time to take off a couple minutes from the 5k time... Post race
Warm down: walked around and stretched a little... went over in my mind, which I was finally able to overtake, about how ticked off I was about my swim, and how it effected the rest of my race. Just not prepared as well as I should have been. What limited your ability to perform faster: .......the mind is sometimes a terrible thing..... lack of confidence with the swim.... not properly trained for this race.... my bad. Event comments: Don't have a whole lot to base things on, so just guessing on things. The race was delayed, but not because of race things. There was a really bad accident about a mile from the start line, which re-routed the volunteers and participants (Sandi and I were by the scene before the firetrucks got there - it was a little scary). Volunteers were plenty, but were easily distracted, so sometimes not sure where we were supposed to go. Lots of food and drink afterwards, which was nice. Would have been nice if there was some sort of expo there, though... even a small one with local stuff... maybe Elkhart Lake just spoils people... Last updated: 2007-07-22 12:00 AM

got lost going to the race. Came upon an accident getting to the race. When we finally got there, got booted out of transition area (kind of) - didn't quite have everything ready to go yet... then missed Sandi's start (oops!)
Ran around helter-skelter as event got closer (see above - missed Sandi's start). Lost the mental war about doing poorly on the swim portion (go figure... I lost a mental battle with myself - wait til I tell my Doctors THAT little bit of information - they told me I was messed up in the head to begin with - now what will they say??)
