Swim
Comments: Stayed well to the right this time in attempt to keep from getting bottlenecked around the buoy. Instead, I ended up running onto the sandbar. It always takes me about 100 yards to start feeling comfortable and not so overwhelmed. Once I got away from the sandbar, I felt much better and got into stride. What would you do differently?: Won't stay so far to the right next time. After taking a wide turn around buoy, I felt far away from the other swimmers and off course. Felt the need to look up quite a bit to reassure myself of my direction. Need to trust myself more to be able to go out a little quicker and maintain the pace rather than trying to speed up towards the end. Transition 1
Comments: Run from the beach through the sand is always a killer. The route was shortened a bit so I was able to jog 90% of it. What would you do differently?: T1 was about as good as it gets. I usually have to take a few extra seconds just to catch my breath after the run. Bike
Comments: This was my first race with clips. With the exception of a few trial runs at home, this was my first real test. I put my shoes on first and then ran with my bike. The distance was short so I handled it okay. Clipped in well, and felt stronger the whole ride than I did with cages. On the way out to the bridge, I was able to maintain 19-21 mph. Got out of saddle on bridge this time. Didn't feel like it helped much, only made my muscles feel more fatigued. Had accelerade in water bottle but I should have diluted it a bit more because it was too sweet, so didn't even drink half of it. What would you do differently?: Other than just spending more time on my bike outside in the elements building endurance, I don't feel like I have to adjust anything major. I was pleased with my time overall. Transition 2
Comments: Once in the parking lot, I eased my feet out of shoes. Had to take more time than usual to put on socks and running shoes. Also opted to wear running shorts over my suit. What would you do differently?: May look into the "zip" laces for my running shoes in order to cut down on time tying them. The extra time in T2, however, helped me to get my legs back once I started running. Run
Comments: It rained much of the run, so I felt cool. I just felt a bit sluggish running in wet shoes. The water stations were not on top of things, so I didn't get as much water as I would have liked. I walked several times throughout run but still managed a pretty decent min./mile pace for me. Was able to pick up the pace quite a bit at end. What would you do differently?: Still need to log more bricks with bike and run in order to build endurance for run. Want to be able to run entire course without feeling like I'm killing myself. Post race
Warm down: Found Bud and drank bottle of water and ate banana and a cookie. Met up with Heather and her family and chatted with them a bit before showering and changing clothes. What limited your ability to perform faster: Training. Event comments: My only complaint is the water stations. The first one out of T2 had no water ready. Volunteers were trying to pour as we were running by. The next station only had about 2 sips in the cups. If it hadn't been raining, I would have been feeling pretty badly. The alarm clock went off at 4:30. Bud was racing, too, so he got up and made us both peanut butter sandwiches on wheat bread. I made up a bottle of accelerade to drink on the drive down. Left at 5:45 and arrived at about 6:15. Had plenty of time to casually set up transition, go to the bathroom, and make our way down to the beach for a warmup.
Swam out and back a couple of times, maybe 200 yds total.
