Pre-race routine:

I had never done an evening race before, so it was difficult to know what to do all day. I also wasn't sure what to eat, so I snacked on power bars, bananas and crackers. I ran errands all morning then the whole family headed up to Anthem , which is a master-planned community north of Phoenix. As I was driving up there and the thermometer read 104 degrees, I was wondering who puts on a tri in this heat, but I guess people like me are willing to do it, Ha! Luckily around 4pm some storms rolled in from the south making it a bit cloudy- thank goodness!
Event warmup:

I just chatted with the other BTers who were there racing and supporting, sipped on Gatorade. We did get a bit of a warm up looking for my friends son who was lost for a bit- but all ended well.
This was a REVERSE tri, so start reading from the bottom!
Swim
  • 09m
  • 437 yards
  • 02m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

These pool swims are hard- especially the 2 way traffic in each lane. You have to wait to pass or you run head on into someone coming the other way. I actually passed a few people in the pool. I could hear my hubby and kids cheering for me at the end of each lap. The first few laps were tough but then I got in a rythm- it was one of my better pool swims. And the water felt great after the hot run and bike.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing- I was Ok with the swim.
Transition 1
  • 00m 40s
Comments:

Racked my bike (kind of in the wrong spot- sorry Chris!), took off my shoes, socks and helmet and jogged to the pool. Transition time is included in my swim.
What would you do differently?:

Remember to takemy number off- I almost wore it into the pool.
Bike
  • 44m 10s
  • 14.75 miles
  • 20.04 mile/hr
Comments:

You know how in a regular tri, your legs feel a bit wobbly/tight coming off the bike? Well, the run-bike transition hurt me- my legs felt very tight the first few miles. Especially my left hamstring. I tried standing up a bit but that didn't help so I tried just spinning for a bit until it worked itself out. I was really hot after the run so I drank my whole aero bottle on the first lap. The first lap was kind of boring, I got passed by a few people- one girl in my AG passed me right out of transition (she placed 2nd O/A) and I rode by myself most of the way. The second lap was more crowded. One scary moment when 2 little girls who were riding their bikes with their dad on the other side of the street, decided to cross the road right in front of me- I swerved and the dad yelled "sorry". I guess they didn't notice there was a bike race!
What would you do differently?:

My legs are not used to run-bike bricks so maybe I should have practised that. And I wish I had sunglasses- my hubby tried to get them to me but transition was closed.
Transition 2
  • 00m 50s
Comments:

This is my first race with clipless pedals, I switched my running shoes for my bike shoes and put my helmet on. Tom (triguyfitz) came into the rack just as I was leaving- I knew he'd be right behind me on his new fast bike :)
Run
  • 22m 40s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

It was hot! My HR felt high from the start but I am used to going all out on the run. There were quite a lot of spectators out on the course and 2 water stops- I didnt take any. People were BBQing in their backyards, which is torture when you are running by.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, this was a PR for me.
Post race
Warm down:

I found my family and grabbed some gatorade- I had used all my water on the bike and was very thirsty (need to get my bike decked out like Tanyas!). I watched the other BTers finish. Tom finished not long after me, Tanya (standwithfist) finished strong despite being stuck behind an aquajogger in the pool, and placed in her AG! Chris (cordova) did awesome and Dan (gramby) finished his first tri!
The awards/results was a bit of a mess. They didnt post results, but I thought I had maybe placed in the top 3 of my AG- it was hard to tell with relays etc. They got a lot of the results wrong at first, calling people up and then finding out they were in a different AG!
It was soon dark and I got my stuff out of transition then hung out for the awards- they never did post results. I got 1st place in my AG . I was really happy.

Event comments:

This was my first tri ever last year, so it was nice to come back and do it again. Last time I did it on my Mtn Bike and got passed by everyone. I beat last years time by about 20 minutes!
