Swim
Comments: What went wrong? I used to be a strong swimmer. Last year I did this swim in 36 minutes. I think the course might have been slightly longer than in years past. Everything started out fine, and then my goggles started to leak. I stopped about 6 times to adjust them. I don't know why they were leaking as I train and race in this pair all the time and they have never leaked before. I finally (last 500 yds or so) just decided to swim with my right eye closed since that side of the goggle wouldn't seal. So, that meant I had no depth perception and it made for a very tiring swim. I could never catch any feet for a good draft. What would you do differently?: Not have my goggles leak? Apparently, this year in my quest for better biking skills, I have let myself go in the one area I used to feel I was strong. Transition 1
Comments: Good transition overall. Popped a couple of endurolytes and tucked 2 packs of Gu into the shorts. Nice part about the longer run from the beach over more grass was that I had less sand on my feet to wash off. What would you do differently?: Nothing. this was good. Bike
Comments: Ok, I practiced this particular route a whole bunch of times. The fastet I ever did in practice was 1:26. I knew this course like the back of my hand. I knew exactly when I would have wind, where all the turns were, etc. I felt very comfortable with the course. I'd planned to make this a Z2 ride, but I got on the bike and almost immediately it was practically Z4. Yikes! I managed to drop it into Z3 for most of the ride. I thought about bringing it down some more, but I really felt quite good so I decided to keep that pace. I had a GU at about the 5K point and another one at 30K. When I hit the 20K mark and saw that I was at 40 minutes, I knew that if I pushed I could bring it in right around 1:20. That was very exciting. The outbound portion of the race has great tail wind and is slightly downhill on a lot of it. Knowing that, gave as much as I could and got some speeds up to 26mph! Coming back is harder - head wind and more uphill. I gave a big whoop at the 35K mark because I knew I had beaten my time from last year (1:36) by a huge margin! What would you do differently?: nothing. this was a fantastic bike for me. Transition 2
Comments: Pretty decent transition. I should have taken the empty GU packets out of my shorts leg. Grabbed two endurolytes, race belt, and fuel belt with wateer and GU. What would you do differently?: nothing Run
Comments: My legs felt amazingly good after such a hard push on the bike. I was very surprised. After the mistakes I made at my race in July I wore good socks for this run and carried my own water even though I knew there would be plenty of water on the course. (Some mistakes you only make once.) It was a very, very hot day. I walked each water station and grabbed 2 waters - one to wear and one to drink. At mile 3 I had a GU because I felt like my energy was starting to drain a bit. By about mile 4 I was starting to feel the leg fatigue pretty good, but I'd made a new friend on the run course, Erin, and we kept eachother going. I was wearing a lot of the water I kept dumping on my head and chest in my shoes and socks. I think they must have weighed 3# each! But, the plan worked and I kept a steady pace and finished the race strong! What would you do differently?: As always, run faster! Post race
Warm down: Drank a bottle of ice water, then drank a bottle of water with 2 scoops of Clif Recovery powder. Walked around the post race activities and packed my stuff. What limited your ability to perform faster: leaky goggles on the swim, wind on the bike (although I really can't complain), general slowness on running Event comments: I really enjoy this race. It's a nice course, well organized, lots of volunteers. I look forward to beating my time again next year! Last updated: 2007-08-13 12:00 AM

Got up at 4:30am and actually felt like I'd had an ok night's sleep. I was nervous, as per my usual, but this was the third time I'd be doing this race so I wasn't quite as nervous. Had my normal prerace breakfast of peanut butter and banana on a bagel with about 8 oz of Gatorade. Left the house at 5:30am. Drank most of a 16 oz bottle of water on the way to the race. Arrived around 6am. Got body marked, greeted friends and set up transition. Transition was moved from prior years traditional spot as there were a lot more racers registered than in previous years. This also meant a lot longer run from the beach into transition.
about 100 meters in the lake
