Swim
Comments: First 200 meters I tried to position myself to the outside of the pack. After rounding first bouy, I just kept to the outside for the long stretch parallel with the beach. Being outside of most of the swimmers there were not to many opportunities to draft. My main concern was to do better with my navigation. I feel I kept in a pretty straight line. After rounding the second bouy it was a straight shot back to the boat ramp. Running up the boat ramp was fairly rocky, I guess I have tender feet. What would you do differently?: Continue to practice on my breathing, get stronger with my swim so I feel more confident to swim in the pack where I can benefit from drafting off of other swimmers. That should help with navigation as well. Transition 1
Comments: The slow part for me was drying feet off and putting on socks. I feel I have to have socks or my feet will pay the price. Everything else went smoothly. I don't have clip-on pedals yet so I went straight into my running shoes. What would you do differently?: I need to upgrade my pedals and get some cycling shoes. Bike
Comments: Hills really took it out of me. I had not trained on hills at all. Looking down at my computer on most of those climbs I was doing about 8-9 mph. Of course the downhills were nice coasting at 35-38 mph. I felt I pushed myself really good on the bike. I wasn't ready for the hills but I feel I conquered them as good as I could. What would you do differently?: Find some hills to train on, and just put more time in the saddle. Transition 2
Comments: T2 was fast, volunteers took your bike for you and racked it while another volunteer handed you your T2 bag. My helmet was off, put a running hat on, running shoes were already on, grabbed a drink bottle and was off. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: Like I mentioned above, the first portion was a trail run. I don't really like running on trails, again I have wimpy feet, but all in all I feel I was doing better than some of the other racers. It was getting very warm, close to 95-96 degrees and the hilly terrain was really taking it out of me. When I hit the asphalt I was thankful but then there was another climb. I did have to walk on part of that climb, but I kept it fast and ran strong at the finish. What would you do differently?: Do some hill training to try to complete that course without having to walk at all. Post race
Warm down: Some fruit and lots of liquid What limited your ability to perform faster: Adequate hill training on the bike and the run. Event comments: Great challenging race for me. I definately want to do it again next year being more prepared for the hills. I will improve. Last updated: 2007-08-15 12:00 AM

Set the alarm for 4:30am, already had everything ready to go so I sat down to some hot oatmeal, vitamins and water. Woke the family up at 5am, got the kids dressed and in the car by 5:20am. We had packed them a breakfast to go the night before. Got to the venue at 6am and it was looking like it was going to be a beautiful day.
Plenty of room in the transition area, I got marked and laid everything out. This took a little different planning then the last race being that it was a point-to-point race. All running gear had to be put into a transition #2 bag to be shuttled over to transition #2 by the race directors. I entered the water about 5 minutes before the 7am start time. About 50 percent of the participants looked to have wetsuits on, I won't be buying a wetsuit until I really need one. The water felt great, my only warm up was the 100 meters or so to get over to the starting bouy.
