Swim
Comments: I seeded myself in the front on the far left side (away from the buoys) and that was great. I was able to swim at my pace almost immediately. I crashed into only three people and was able to get back moving after stopping to apologize. I got tired after rounding the third buoy, but was able to maintain a decent enough pace after that. What would you do differently?: Keep the seeding and location, but try to swim at a more constant pace and save some energy for the end. Transition 1
Comments: This is an improvement, but I'm still slow in T1. What would you do differently?: Lose the shirt, affix the gu flask to my bike, not be so compulsive about washing/drying my feet. Bike
Comments: I suck at the bike. I felt like I struggled the whole time and had a really tough time passing people (especially the guy on the Trek who insisted on riding on the left). The women who beat me (tall, thin woman with butterfly tattoo on her back and redheaded woman in the black Zoot outfit with the bright blue stitching) were just better on climbing and passing. I tried to stay with them, but couldn't do it. I did pass that guy, though. What would you do differently?: Practice and get stronger and faster on the bike. This is really my weak point. Transition 2
Comments: Better than T1! What would you do differently?: Not return to my area for one more sip of water. DOH! Run
Comments: I am very pleased with this run. It is only 6 seconds slower than my PR stand-alone 5K. I passed a lot of people who had clearly kicked my butt in the bike and had fun waving to all of the people who I recognized from my bike rack and transition and everyone else. What would you do differently?: Try to kick it faster in the last mile. I think this is a conditioning issue. Post race
Warm down: No warm down, but there were wet towels at the finish. AHHHH! The post-race food included bananas, watermelon and good-looking sausages. What limited your ability to perform faster: Poor bike skills and slow T1. Event comments: This was a great race. We stayed at the Lake Blackshear Resort (about the same price as a hotel) and it was great to be able to return to our room to get stuff, use the bathroom, etc. We would definitely return with our kids again because there were plenty of outdoor things to do at this state park.
