Swim
Comments: Talk about a shocker. I let some people go in front of me, and then I got going with a nice smooth steady pace. I started seeing people from the wave in front of me on the second turn. I just kept going and didn't try to go to fast. When I got out of the water, I looked over to see a friend of mine that started in the same wave. I think I have that fear of open water thing kicked for now. What would you do differently?: Nothing. The swim felt great. Transition 1
Comments: I didn't expect it to start to mist on us, so I was trying to decide on a if I should put on more clothing. Said the heck with it, and just went. What would you do differently?: Hurry a little more. Bike
Comments: NEVER, EVER, CHANGE YOUR HYDRATION ON RACE DAY!!!!! Alright, now that I have that out of the way. I decided to try Accelerade with the longer events. I took it with me for a run the weekend before, and did just fine. On this day though, it sat in the back of my throat, and caused me to sound like a 2 pack a day smoker riding down the street. I finally figured it out about mile 9-10. I felt sick by that time from all coughing. Settled down in the second lap, but was running close to empty by the time I got done with the bike. What would you do differently?: NEVER, EVER, CHANGE YOUR HYDRATION ON RACE DAY!!!!! Just plain old water for me. Transition 2
Comments: I did alright once I got off the bike. It just took a minute to find my legs, and get going through transition What would you do differently?: NEVER, EVER, CHANGE YOUR HYDRATION ON RACE DAY!!!!! Run
Comments: Legs locked up from little to drink on the ride. It took a little bit to get loose, and get running. This is about average for my speed. Next year, more bricks, and more running. Walked through the water stops, and took some nice big drinks. I felt good at the end. What would you do differently?: NEVER, EVER, CHANGE YOUR HYDRATION ON RACE DAY!!!!! Post race
Warm down: I got done with the race, and was met with congrats from some of our members of the County Cycle Tri team. Got some water & Trail mix, and waited for my sister to cross the finish line. She came in 4:25 behind me, which means she beat me by 2:35. It was our first at this distance, and won't be our last. What limited your ability to perform faster: NEVER, EVER, CHANGE YOUR HYDRATION ON RACE DAY!!!!! Event comments: I have done some other races that have had alot better post race activities. Alot of people left the race site before the awards since it was misting/raining. I stuck around because I needed to get my boat out of the water. I was hoping to win the bike, but I didn't win. I would do this race again, and will be looking at doing some Olympic length events next year. My sister is talking about doing a Half Ironman next year. I may join her. Woke up early, and had my usual peanut granola bar & peanuts. My 5 year old came down, and asked me to stay home, and put her to sleep, and all that, but I volunteered my boat to help on the swim course. I laid down with her for 20 minutes, but she couldn't fall back asleep. Finally my parents showed up. My mom laid down with my daughter while I hooked up my boat, and took my dad to the race. We got down to the race, and a volunteer noticed a cat in my boat. It was my neighbors cat, and he rode down 35w & 694 & 35E & 36, to 61 in my boat, oh how much fun would that be on a 60 degree morning. He sat in the back of my truck under the nice dry topper for the race.
Lots of talking, and a little stretching.
