Swim
Comments: I had never been much of a swimmer but trained enough to do the whole swim freestyle. I was in the right place in the wave, passing a few and not getting passed. I had to "sprint" around a couple of folks and got a little winded so I had to drop into a breaststroke. I finished strong -- for me, anyway! -- and got out of the pool feeling good. What would you do differently?: Try to stay in my stroke even when passing. Transition 1
Comments: It was cold and wet -- everything was soaked. I mindlessly try to dry my feet off and struggle with the socks. I went with a running jacket for the bike ride because of the rain -- good choice. What would you do differently?: Must use synthetic fabric socks, next time...if any. Use a bucket or plastic bin for gear. Bike
Comments: It was a miserable day for a ride. After a big downhill out of town, the course was relatively flat, save for one hill in the middle and the hill back into town. All kinds of wind and precip along the way -- hail, maybe sleet, but it didn't snow...I don't think. I passed about as many as rode by me and I tried to cheer everyone on through our collective misery. The last hill was tough -- thank goodness for grannie gear. Transition 2
Comments: I took my time finding my legs and walked into the TA. I was cold and sat down on a wet towel to put my shoes on. Walked out of the TA. Run
Comments: Once I got going I felt pretty good on the run, but I thought I was slow. It wasn't long before I stopped trying to avoid the ankle-deep puddles of water -- the ground was too soggy and worse to run on. I couldn't make it up the last hill and walked to the crest before picking up the pace for a strong finish. Post race
Warm down: Stretching; peanut butter bagel and lot's of hot chocolate! Thank goodness the hotel let me have a late check-out...it gave me time for a nice, long, hot bath. Event comments: This was a great experience for a first-timer. It was a well run event and the town supports it all the way. Lot's of *great* volunteers. Last updated: 2007-08-23 12:00 AM

This was my first triathlon. Anxiety level was high and I didn't sleep well the night before mostly worrying about the weather. Got up at about 5:30 for a wake-up shower and light breakfast. Suited-up, double-checked gear, off the the race. I was dropped off just outside the TA and started feeling better as I saw more people. I had been training hard and felt ready, but still felt out of place. It would have been nicer if it wasn't in the 50's and raining off and on. I followed the crowd to pick up my chip and get marked up. This is an "Angels Race" and you're asked to remember an angel in your life who inspires you -- I found it hard to keep my composure as I asked to have the initials of my father and sister put on my right arm. I racked my bike and tried to setup my gear so it won't get too wet -- I should have brought a bucket! I started to talk with other newbies and the butterflies started to go away as I realized, of course, that I wasn't the only out here for the first time!
I don't know if the two hours I spent waiting for my swim start helped me ease into things or burn too much energy -- probably both! I watched the start of the swim at 8:00 and was in and out of the pool area for the next 90 minutes watching racers go in and out of the TA. Yes, I saw lot's of racers come in off the bike before I got in the pool! I spent about 20 minutes in the warm-up pool before getting in line for my swim.
