Swim
Comments: Due to elevation (3500 ft.) and the chaotic nature of the mass start, I couldn't seem to catch my breath the entire swim portion and hense never got into a good rhythm. I floundered until the last several hundred yards and then was able to bring it in strong. What would you do differently?: I would have started wide, away from the middle of the crowd to avoid being in the middle of the chaldron of bodies. Transition 1
Comments: Very poor transition. In the first place, we had to run around 200 yards up a relatively steep ramp to get from the lake to the bike transition. I struggled to get my biking clothes on -- everything stuck to me, I even put my shirt on backwards and then couldn't get it off because it stuck to my skin. What would you do differently?: I need to practice this transition more. Perhaps I could forego socks at this point as they are difficult to get on when my feet are wet. I need to lay out the shirt and number belt better so that I can just slip into them. Bike
Comments: Not a long enough bike segment for my liking. The bike is my strongest element and 10 miles wasn't enough time for me to really make up some time. Still, I did okay. I felt average until about mile 4 when I got into a groove and started to crank. Coming back I was able to overtake some of the bikers who had gone by me at the start. Transition 2
Comments: This transition went smoothly and I was able to change shoes, grab my hat and a gel to suck down on the run and get to it. Run
Comments: Thought I was just not going to make it during the first mile. The uphill on the rough rocky trail was just miserable and I had to walk off and on. But by the time I made it to the paved section my Accel gel had kicked in and I was able to maintain forward motion to the turn around point. Then I began to feel much better and was even able to put some speed on during the last mile before the finish. Overall I was pleased with at least the last two thirds of the race. What would you do differently?: Train more hills. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: Elevation. Need to train more on the run, but I'm struggling with a nagging ankle injury. Event comments: The race was loosely organized by a local Rotary club. The transition area was basic, with no bike racks so that we had to lay our bikes on the parking lot. Still, it was a fun day with a lot of volunteers supporting us throughout. Last updated: 2007-09-03 12:00 AM
