Swim
Comments: When the horn went off, I started to swim and noted the chip strap felt loose and next thing I know it came off. I was bobbing for it for what seemed like eternity and amazingly was able to grab it despite the murky green water. I put it back on very tight and again after a few kicks it came off again, so I stuffed it between the cleavage and off I went now the very last swimmer from my wave due to the monkey business. I started settling into a good rhythm with a freestyle stroke and then got hammered by an errant male swimmer that was cutting right through our path out. Unfortunately he wasn't the only kamakazee swimmer and I swam most of the way out breast stroke dodging quite a few of the male swimmers coming back that weren't aware (or didn't care) what direction they were swimming. I never got a good rhythm from that point forward and wondered why in the world did I practice the freestyle stroke as often as I did if I didn't get a great chance to use it. What would you do differently?: Just wear the timing chip in between the cleavage to begin with so hopefully I can get out before the men start heading back. I would also just bring my running shoes down to the water's edge and change into them down there since there was a 500 yard run up a ramp to get to T1 instead of trying to run it in flip-flops. Bike
Comments: I felt very good the entire first loop, but beginning the second loop I had to pee! It gave me more reason to try and get back to T2 ASAP! Unfortunately no port-a-potties. The bike is by far my strongest component, so I was disappointed my time wasn't better, but I lost my chain as I downshifted on the second incline...how frustrating! Fortunately it didn't happen again the rest of the ride. What would you do differently?: Not drink as much water so I don't have the urge to go during the race...that shouldn't be an issue in a 90 minute race. Transition 2
Comments: This was where I was supposed to make up time since I wasn't using clip-in peddles, but alas, the restrooms were calling. Run
Comments: My legs after the bike didn't feel too fried, but it was quite hot by this point of the race and I didn't want to over do it so I told myself I would walk fast up the inclines and run down the declines and flat areas. I walked a lot!!!! I brought my own water bottle full of HEED to supplement the water that was given and I am glad that I did otherwise I may have not finished at all. My heart rate with just fast walking was in the low 160's. What would you do differently?: Train more in the heat with inclines so that my body isn't as shocked with the intensity. Hopefully next year they will move it to a week later or at least an earlier start time. Please more water stations! Post race
Warm down: I was dumping ice down the front and back of my trisuit wanting to cool off. They ran out of water at the end of the race, so made due with a few grapes, bananas and what was left of my HEED. Thank goodness I didn't go all out because I would have really hit hard in the end since there was no water. What limited your ability to perform faster: This was my first triathlon and so I had no idea what to expect. As well, it seemed like Murphy's law seemed to trump up each segment of the race for me, but I still was on a high in just being able to finish the race and I look forward to my next one. Event comments: I will be back next year to see if I can improve my performance. I hope they will change the swim portion to a loop format versus an out and back. As well, have the race start earlier in the morning to reduce the heat factor. All staff were very friendly. Last updated: 2007-09-05 12:00 AM

Just made sure I had all of my gear.
Stretched a little and double checked I had the transition area layed out correctly.
